Elk Lake is proud of their students and congratulates them for their accomplishments.
The 2025 Claire Williams O’Neil Scholarship (CWOS) has been awarded to two Susquehanna Community High School seniors in various amounts ranging from $40,000-$60,000: Mason Opalka and Molly Griga. This Scholarship Foundation looks for students who aspire to dream colleges and universities. It is named after Claire Williams O’Neil who was a native of Susquehanna, and was very actively involved in education and community service during her life. Their mission is to have recipients give back to their community through a variety of mentor type programs.

Mason is the son of Margo Pulling and Tom Opalka. Mason is an avid member of the Boy Scouts program, earning his rank of Eagle Scout. He has consistently put in a variety of volunteer hours at Elk Mountain Ski resort over the past few years serving as part of their Ski Patrol Team. Mason also participated in a variety of sports and clubs throughout high school such as track and field, cross country, Saber Buddy Program, and National Honor Society. Aside from his volunteer work and his extra-curricular activities, Mason still finds time to hold down part time jobs and maintain a high grade point average as well. As he prepares for graduation, Mason plans on attending Penn State University to major in Civil Engineering.
Molly is the daughter of Kim and Chad Tuttle, and Sam Griga. Molly has been an extremely active member of not only our school district but the community as well. She is a volunteer for the Susquehanna Fire Department putting in countless hours of volunteer work and events for the community. Molly has devoted a large amount of her time with the Student Council, and Music programs as well. During her senior year of high school, she volunteered in the Elementary school serving as an assistant in the special education environment. Molly also participated in several other sports, clubs and organizations such as the Saber Buddy Program, Archery, Drama Club, Yearbook, Football Cheerleading, and served as Class President for two years. As she begins to prepare for her future, Molly has made plans to attend Marywood University for Early Childhood Education.
Susquehanna Community is grateful for the support and generosity of the Claire Williams O’Neil Foundation and the opportunities they provide to our students. Congratulations to both Mason and Molly and best wishes for a bright future ahead!

It is with great pleasure that Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) congratulates students on being named to the Spring, 2026 Dean's List. The spring terms run from January to May.
The following local students qualified for the honor: Jeanine Moreck, of Hop Bottom; Mackenzie Lewis, of Hallstead; CALLIE Stanton, of Great Bend; Brooke Vecchi, of Montrose; Amber Milliron, of Meshoppen.
Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.500 to 3.699 for the reporting term are named to the Dean's List. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired 8-week terms grouped in fall, winter/spring, and summer.
Wynter Stanton, of Starrucca, was 64 first-generation SUNY Oneonta students who were inducted into the Alpha Alpha Alpha national honor society during a ceremony on campus on April 18, 2026.
Stanton is studying Biology and is part of the class of 2027.
Alpha Alpha Alpha, known as Tri-Alpha for short, was founded in 2018 to recognize and celebrate the hard work and academic success of first-generation university students. This was the fourth class of SUNY Oneonta students to be inducted into the national honor society.
Students qualify for induction into Tri-Alpha if they meet the following criteria: The student has earned at least 30 credits/semester hours in the academic year toward an associate degree or baccalaureate degree; the undergraduate student has achieved an overall undergraduate GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale; and neither of the student's parents, stepparents, nor legal guardians, completed a bachelor's or associate's degree.
