Judith Herschel Speaks To BPW

Pictured (l-r) are: Linda Bedford- January BPW Chair, Judy Herschel, Jenny Bixby-President

On January 25, 2018 Judy Herschel, former counselor for Trehab and now a candidate for U.S. Congress in the 10th district spoke to NJD BPW. She spoke on substance abuses and treatment. She encouraged us as a community to get involved by understanding and supporting those effected. Judy also talked about how women need to get involved, whether it be in political office or as a group such as the NJD BPW. If any women are interested in giving back to the community, please call 570-853-3584; new ideas are always welcome.

Theater Group To Support Shelter

What if your dog could talk – and then became the “other woman” in your marriage? The actors of Tonylou Productions answer this biting question when they perform the two-act comedy Sylvia, on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9 and 10, at the Carbondale Grand Hotel & Conference Center, 25 South Main St., Carbondale, PA. Proceeds will benefit the Dessin Animal Shelter in Honesdale.

Tony Schwartz and Kerry Brazen star as a man and his canine companion in Sylvia, a benefit for Honesdale’s Dessin Animal Shelter

The evening starts with cocktails and a cash bar at 5:30 p.m. and a surf-and-turf dinner at 6:30 p.m. The show follows at 8:30 p.m. Tickets and reservations are required. Call the hotel at 570-536-6020 to reserve your seat.

Sylvia, by A.R. Gurney, tells the hilarious story of a middle-aged married couple and the stray dog that comes between them. Greg’s career is winding down, and he’s having a midlife crisis. Kate’s career is taking off, and she’s enjoying the empty nest. When Greg brings home a stray dog (“Sylvia”) he found in the park, the mutt becomes a major bone of contention in their marriage, creating the most unusual love triangle in stage history. Sarah Jessica Parker starred as Sylvia when the play opened in New York, in 1996.

Backstage magazine called Sylvia “Howlingly funny.” The New York Daily News called it “involving, beautiful, funny, touching and profound.”

The play stars Tony Schwartz as the restless husband, Greg; Regina Yeager-Drouse as the neglected wife, Kate; and Bart Mahon playing three roles: Kate’s tipsy college friend, a marriage counselor, and Greg’s dog-walking buddy. The play features veteran actor Kerry Brazen as the saucy stray, Sylvia. Schwartz is directing.

Visitors Bureau Accepting Events

Events that take place between April 1, 2018, and March 31, 2019, are now being accepted for the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau Annual Calendar of Events booklet.

The deadline to submit events is Friday, February 23.

All community and non-profit organizations in the Endless Mountains are encouraged to submit their events for the year before the February 23 deadline, free of charge. The events must take place in the Endless Mountains Region of Sullivan, Susquehanna, and Wyoming counties and should be of interest to visitors coming to the area.

To get an event in the calendar, go to the visitors bureau’s website – www.EndlessMountains.org- and click on ‘add event’ on the homepage; fill out the online form and submit once complete. Events that have multiple dates that are not consecutive must be submitted individually (example: a performance given on July 3, 10, 17, and 24, would need to be submitted four times).

The event information will be reviewed and placed on the bureau’s website once approved. The bureau reserves the right to edit and/or delete any submission.

The events booklet will be distributed at the bureau’s visitors center on Route 6 in Tunkhannock, in brochure racks, as well as at visitors bureau member businesses, PennDOT welcome centers, travel and sports shows the bureau attends, and individual requests that come to the bureau via phone calls and requests from other marketing initiatives. The bureau plans to print 50,000 copies.

For more information, contact the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau at 836-5431, 800-769-8999, or shelley@endlessmountains.org.

Give An Hour

Susquehanna County, PA (January 29, 2018) B/S/S/T Area Agency on Aging, Inc. and the Apprise Program are looking for passionate individuals who enjoy a challenge to join their team. The Apprise Program serves to assist Medicare beneficiaries in understanding their benefits, applying for cost-saving programs, filing appeals when necessary, and more. Volunteers do not have to be experts in the Medicare field; training is provided. All skill levels are welcome as some of the most helpful tasks can be filing, making appointment reminder phone calls, and general clerical duties.

Apprise volunteers, Carolyn Pendrell and Donna Townsend, help to simplify some of the paperwork that can be daunting to Medicare beneficiaries

Many volunteers serving the Apprise Program are retirees from human service oriented fields looking to stay sharp and do something important with their free time. Some volunteers sought help themselves and then decided they would like to help another in return. Whatever the reason may be for deciding to volunteer, all agree the joy of helping others is motivation enough to continue. One volunteer cited her reason for volunteering was because of the tremendous need for Apprise services in the community.

Another volunteer spoke of how rewarding it is when a beneficiary “sees the light.” Many Apprise volunteers selflessly give their time, and when asked their reason for continuing to volunteer, one volunteer admitted that it is “not necessarily fun, but it is meaningful.”

Medicare beneficiaries often call on the Apprise program when they face stress and anxiety resulting from healthcare insurance issues. Volunteers in turn provide unbiased advocacy and clarity. You can be the helpful person that leaves beneficiaries in tears of joy and relief!

For additional information on the APPRISE program or with questions regarding your own Medicare health insurance, please call the B/S/S/T Area Agency on Aging, Inc. at 1-800-982-4346.

The B/S/S/T Area Agency on Aging, Inc. is funded in part by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging; the United Way of Bradford County; the United Way of Susquehanna County; the Lycoming County United Way; and the Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, and Tioga County Commissioners.

Creative Gift Ideas for Your Valentine

Looking to surprise your loved one this Valentine’s Day with something a bit different? Check out these five creative gift ideas that will help make the day special.

1. Take a trip around the world with your taste buds. Cooking dinner for your partner on Valentine’s Day is nothing new, but kick it up a notch with an “Around the World” theme. Pick some destinations you’d love to travel to and get into the kitchen together to create their signature dishes. For extra points, track down drinks specifically found in those regions to pair with your food. You’ll have fun experiencing new cuisine, and it may even ignite a spark to book a trip!

2. Make more time together. Use some creativity to show your Valentine that you want to spend more time together. Pair a new timepiece with roses for a unique presentation. Consider classic fashion choices with Casio’s Vintage timepieces, which feature stainless steel bands in different metallic color combinations, a daily alarm, hourly time signal and an auto-calendar, ensuring you are never late for a date.

3. Commission a custom family portrait. Whether you have kids, pets or it is just the two of you, a custom family portrait is a sweet gift and a great piece of artwork for your home. Find an independent portrait artist on a site like Etsy or put your own artistic abilities to the test and create the portrait yourself.

4. Create an at-home spa day. Get pampered without leaving the house. Book a travelling masseuse or create DIY bath products like bath bombs or scrubs with essential oils. Create a spa-like atmosphere with low lights, candles and flower arrangements. Order dinner in afterwards and enjoy the special time together as relaxed as can be.

5. Write a love song. Whether you write it yourself or pick a favorite that’s personal to you, performing a love song is a touching way to show you cherish someone. Enhance your performance with a portable keyboard that makes learning easy, such as Casio’s CTK-2550. It features 61 full-size keys, 400 high-quality tones and 150 built-in rhythms to ensure you have all the tools you need to create a beautiful musical number for the one you love. Or, connect to your iOS or Android device to use the free Chordana Play app, which uses the keyboard’s display to show you how to play your favorite songs. Just download your favorite MIDI files, connect your device’s headphone output to the keyboard’s audio input, and explore an endless library of music. (StatePoint)
