SCHS Graduation
Submitted By Bridget Milos, School Counselor
Saturday, June 9th was the 2018 commencement ceremony for Susquehanna Community School District. A total of 54 students received diplomas.

Susquehanna Community High School Class of 2018
Salutatorian, Emily Frye gave a speech to her class about past memories they had shared together growing up, and then she spoke about making mistakes in life and learning from them.
Valedictorian, Skyla Wilson addressed her class on special moments they shared together as a class, and the many opportunities that were given to them throughout their years at Susquehanna Community.
Mr. Brent Soden, High School Principal, presented students who have achieved the highest GPA in certain subject areas with awards. Additionally, he presented students with pins who earned Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Summa Cum Laude.
The 2018 commencement speaker was Andrzej Tomczyk, 2013 graduate of Susquehanna Community and a recent graduate of West Point with a 4.0 average. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army. His degree is in Business Management with a track in Systems Engineering. Andrzej is headed to Ranger School in July and will be living in Colorado Springs. He spoke to the students about finding that person who was their "hero" and being that "hero" to someone else in their life. He also took time to recognize some of our students and their accomplishments.
Prior to the graduation ceremony, the seniors were honored at their annual Class Night, on June 1, where over $147,000 was awarded to students in scholarships. This would not be possible without the support of our small community!

Mt. View Students Take The D.A.R.E.
Fifth grade students at Mountain View Elementary recently participated in the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program, hosted by Mr. Gene Michinski, D.A.R.E. Instructor. In this program, students learned not only the effects of drugs, alcohol and violence on their personal well being, but also how to use the D.A.R.E. decision making model, to make better decisions.

Mountain View Fifth Grade Students
As an end to the program and part of their graduation, students wrote essays about what they learned during the D.A.R.E. program. Winning essay winners included Ryleigh Kilmer, Coralynn McHenry and Mimi Sedlak. Miss Sedlak stated in her essay, "The D.A.R.E. program tries to minimize the amount of people who make bad decisions by explaining why it's bad for you in hopes to prevent more smoking, alcohol, and drug related deaths. The D.A.R.E. program also teaches you how to make the responsible decision in difficult situations with friends, school, and by steering clear and staying out of trouble."
Mountain View would like to thank Mr. Gene Michinski, Mrs. Marion O'Malley, District Attorney, and Mr. Lance Benedict, County Sheriff, for bringing this great program to our students.
