June Is Dairy Month

My name is Mary Catherine Chidester and I am the 2018-2019 Susquehanna County Dairy Princess. I am the daughter, niece and granddaughter of incredibly passionate dairy farmers. I help on the farm everyday with my three siblings. When I'm not in the barn, I play my cello with the Marywood University String Project and promote the dairy industry. I hope that my family's love of dairy farming and passion for the dairy industry is relayed in my work as Dairy Princess. As Dairy Princess, I hope to share my love for the dairy industry with members of the community and teach the benefits of including dairy in a healthy diet to people of all ages.

The month of June is Dairy Month! During the month, we celebrate the tasty, healthful products provided to us by our dairy industry as well as the important environmental contributions made by our dairy producers.

Our dairy industry should be celebrated for its health benefits. Milk contains calcium, an essential nutrient that that is necessary to build strong bones. One eight-ounce glass of milk contains as much calcium as ten cups of raw spinach. Milk also contains the essential nutrient protein. Protein is needed to help strengthen muscles, especially after exercising. Milk also contains potassium, phosphorous, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin A, vitamin B12, and vitamin D. Milk's health benefits should be important to us all and are worth celebrating!

The dairy industry provides many products that taste great. There are many different dairy products, and everyone is sure to find one that they love. Three dairy products you should eat every day are milk, cheese, and yogurt. There are plenty of other dairy treats as well, such as butter, sour cream, whipped cream, and my personal favorite, ice cream.

The dairy industry has a very positive environmental impact. Many dairy farmers live on or near the land they farm. It is important to the farmers to protect the air, land, soil, and well-being of their local environment. They take care in making sure any waste is disposed of safely and properly and try to recycle as much as they can. When milk is processed, it goes through a very simple system, which creates very little waste. When members of the dairy industry take care of the environment, a better world is created for us all, and that is something we can all celebrate.

This Dairy Month, enjoy a glass of milk and have an ice cream sundae. Celebrate our great dairy industry and its health benefits, positive environmental impact, and its great taste. And remember to celebrate the dairy industry all year.

Pet of the Week

Move over J-Lo and Mariah, there's a new diva in town and she is right here at True Friends! Kay is a sleek, silver coated, independent gal, with a craving for affection and a sweet disposition. Smart, beautiful, spayed and UTD, this fine specimen of feline "purr"fection with the crystal, yellow-green eyes, needs to be the queen bee in her palace, so a home without other pets would suit her best. Please stop in and meet "Her Majesty" and make her the ruler of your heart.

We have several wonderful cats at True Friends that aren't fans of other cats and need to be your one and only. Because of this, they have been waiting at True Friends for some time. In hopes of finding them their forever home, we are waiving our sets fees on ALL cats that need to be your only cat. If you are looking for a four legged companion, please consider one of the very needy kitties at our local shelter.
