Mobile Pantry To Fete Volunteers

The Montrose Mobile Pantry will likely pack a record 300 portions of fresh produce and food staples for its July 13 free food distribution.

They could not have done it without volunteers and donations from local groups, organizers said.

"The pantry's success in helping the working poor, mothers and children, the disabled and elderly would not have happened without the support and commitment of the Montrose community", said Rev. Doug Sivers of the Montrose United Methodist Church and co-chairman, along with Jo Ann Leonard, of MMP.

Every second Friday of the month since June, 2017, at least 40 volunteers - from high school kids to retirees to everyday citizens - show up to unload the food truck, pack groceries and help people load food in their vehicles.

More than a few volunteers look forward to that day as a way to help their friends and neighbors. Several who receive food also volunteer, despite the stresses in their own lives.

In June, more than 250 households received free food.

In addition to the monthly distribution, MMP also holds a summer lunchbox food distribution for Montrose area schoolchildren in need during the summer months. In June, about 80 children were given free lunch food to take home.

As a way to say thank you, the Montrose United Methodist Church is hosting a pancake breakfast, from 9-11 am June 29 for all volunteers. To register, email gleonard@stny.rr.com; or call 570-278-2147.

Additionally, MMP would like to thank the churches, service groups, individuals and businesses who donate money. The Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank donates at least 12 food items every month. MMP uses local donations to pay for milk, bread and peanut butter. St. Paul's Episcopal Church donates $250 a month to pay for bread and has donated an additional $1,000. The Montrose United Methodist Church donates the space for the distributions and generously shares its nonprofit status with the MMP. The First Presbyterian Church of Montrose has donated more than $1,400. The Lawsville Free Methodist donated $500. Several other individuals and groups donated $500 or more over the past year.

A share of proceeds from the Montrose Wine and Chocolate Festival and an anonymous donor fund the summer lunchbox program.

For more information, call 571-214-2184 or visit MMP on Facebook.
