Mt. View Garden Club Plant Exchange

The Mountain View Garden Club Plant Exchange & Marketplace is a grassroots effort to connect the local community through the free exchange and sale of plants along with resource sharing of gardening information.  This year there will be a venue change for the 13th annual event as we join forces with the Rail Trail Council of Northeastern Pennsylvania “Art on the Trail” in sponsoring “Art in Bloom”.

The event will be held on Saturday, June 24, from 11am til 6pm at the Rail Trail Council Grounds and Robert  Stark’s Mill in Union Dale.

Pictured (l-r) during a planning meeting are: JoAnn Hall, Dawn Howell, Louise Guszick, Sheryl Brownlow, Deb McNamara, Linda Whitney.

The garden club will still be selling perennials grown in area gardens and will still offer the opportunity to bring two perennials from your garden to exchange for two plants of like size or value.  The perennials are sold at very reasonable prices and over the years provided many area residents the opportunity to establish and add to their perennial beds with locally grown plants.

In addition to buying or exchanging plants, local artisans and vendors will be selling their wares and the Rail Trail Council will be offering special trail events.

As part of the festivities, students from both Forest City and Mountain View schools will be displaying their art work and music will be provided by Jim Carro & Friends.

Mark your calendar and watch for more information as plans continue to develop for “Art in Bloom”!

Delmonicos 4-H Club

The Delmonicos 4-H club held their first meeting of the year on March 17th at the Bridgewater Church office in Montrose. Our leader, Dave Wood, led the meeting until we elected officers. Our new officers are: President Hannah Decker, Vice President Taylor Sebring, Secretary Samantha Sebring and Treasurer Samantha Warner. We have many new members so Hannah and Taylor led us in an ice breaker to get to know each other.

Our members will be showing swine, sheep, goats, beef, rabbits and dairy beef. We also have 2 new clover bud members. The membership paper work was passed out. The club will pay the $20 fee for 4-H. We closed the meeting with singing and cupcakes in honor of Tina Decker’s birthday. Our next meeting will be April 10, 7pm at the church. New members are always welcome!

Ice Cream for Breakfast?

When you wake up in the morning, what’s the first thing you do? Grab a cup of coffee? Pour a bowl of cereal? Sit and watch TV? Well, why don’t you try treating yourself with ice cream? According to a Japanese scientist, ice cream stimulates the brain into a better, active state which helps increase alertness and mental capacity. For example, in a clinical trial at Tokyo's Kyorin University, those who ate ice cream for breakfast in the morning scored better on a mental exercise test than those who didn’t. Who would’ve thought, right?

While this may be exciting news for those of you who are lovers of the sweet treat, let’s not forget what ice cream has to offer on a daily basis. Without a doubt, it is an important source of nutrients. Ice cream is created by a process that churns and chills mixtures of milk and cream with other ingredients such as fruits and syrups. Any flavor of ice cream contains a vast amount of calcium and phosphorous, as it offers a blast of energy due to the number of carbohydrates it obtains. Weather it be chocolate or vanilla, vitamins such as A, C, D, and E can be found in the treat as well. Although it does contain a rather high content of sugar and fat, ice cream does have a selection for every and any type of consumer. Various stores carry low-fat or low-sugar ice cream products within their selection.

As the Dairy Princess of Susquehanna County, I enjoy ice cream at any time of the day. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at bdancewhda@gmail.com. On another note, what do you say? Is it time to treat yourself and brain with ice cream?

Pet of the Week

Zep

Zep is a shy young fellow. He is 7 months old, neutered, and has been with us at True Friends for the past 5 months. He can be seen in our “ Romper Room” with all his furry feline friends.  He would love a chance to bloom in a furever home!

We are presently waiving our fees on Zep and all the dogs and cats that have been patiently waiting at our shelter for over 3 months.  We haven’t and won’t give up on them and they haven’t given up on you.  Please consider adopting a pet that has watched so many others be adopted and is dreaming of their turn at finding a loving new home.

Fun Fact:As of 2015 there are more than 500 million domestic cats across the globe. Won't you join this popular movement and take home your next best friend?  Zep sure hopes you do!
