Pet of the Week

Lucky, Rascal and Sam

Our final Pet Of the Week for 2016 features the neediest pups presently at True Friends. Pictured are Lucky(18 years old), Rascal(16 years old), and Sam(10 years old) who are three Bichon Frise mixes who were brought to the shelter when their owner moved. How sad that these gentle old souls are spending the holidays confused and depressed rather than comfortably in a warm, loving home.  We can only imagine what is going through their minds as everything familiar to them is gone and they are feeling frightened and abandoned.

Please consider being a guardian angel and foster or adopt these three deserving seniors.  All are already altered and with some TLC and a loving environment, they will surely thrive and realize there is still some happiness left in the world for them.

We are still waiving our adoption fees until January 2nd in hopes of finding all our dogs and cats a new home for the New Year!  It’s not too late for you to make their dreams come true for the holidays!

In lieu of a fun fact this week, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who recently did something special for our animals. Whether you made a monetary contribution, brought in some tasty treats and toys, did a food drive, or adopted, our animals are sincerely grateful to you for coming together and making their Christmas so special. All of us at True Friends wish you all a very joyful new year!

3 Ways to Enjoy the Great Indoors

Weather not so nice today? It can be easy to feel restless when you’re spending the day indoors.

But there are plenty of ways to have fun at home. From redecorating to catching up on your favorite book, the discount experts at Dollar General are sharing some time-tested ideas for occupying your time in the “great indoors.”

Reorganize and Redecorate

Spend an afternoon organizing and adding personal touches to the rooms that your family enjoys the most. It can be a faster and more enjoyable task than you might think, if you are properly prepared.

Consider purchasing affordable, decorative baskets to hold papers, toys, books and other items that can clutter your home. Once organized, you can add accent pillows and decorative accessories like lamps, throws and pictures to complete the look.

Movie Day!

Instead of making a trip to the movie theater, bring the movie theater home -- complete with all the trimmings. Gather some of your favorite movies, snacks and candies for your own little film festival. Consider sticking to a theme, like a favorite actor, genre or era. This is a great way to spend time indoors with family and friends.

Snack smart by looking for money-saving coupons. You can find great deals by downloading Dollar General digital coupons online at dollargeneral.com/coupons or through the Dollar General mobile app for smartphones. Digital coupons are an easy way to save on favorite items.

Catch Up On Reading

Spend a relaxing afternoon checking off books on your “must read” list. Set up a quiet, comfortable space for reading and be sure to leave your smartphone in another room, so you won’t be tempted by interruptions. Make it a group activity by creating reading challenges between those in your family or even joining a book club.

Whether curled up with a book or hosting friends for a movie extravaganza, never underestimate the fun you can have indoors. (StatePoint)

Easy Ways to Make Your Bathroom Safer

You may think of your bathroom as a relaxing oasis. Unfortunately, bathrooms are actually the site of 200,000 injuries annually nationwide, according to the National Safety Council. These incidents happen to people of all ages -- from young children who may see the bathroom as a play area, to expecting women whose balance may be off kilter, to seniors.

You can reduce the risk of falling by adding grab bars near the toilet, along the showerhead wall and on the back wall of the tub or shower. Grab bars also provide assistance for getting in and out of the tub, as well raising or lowering yourself onto the toilet.

Because people of all ages are prone to injury, adding these safety features is a good idea for every household. And these days, you can do so without compromising on style -- brands like Moen offer grab bars in different sizes, finishes and styles, so these elements can blend seamlessly into any décor.

With a few simple considerations, you can prioritize safety in your home’s bathrooms. (StatePoint)

What to Know about Your Drinking Water

Recently there has been growing concern about the quality of the water we drink, outside and inside our own homes. Homeowners across the country realize that potential contaminants can compromise the quality of water that comes out of the tap at home, work or other community sources.

At a time when safe tap water is not necessarily a given, consider investing in an easy-to-use and maintain water filtration system that can be used at-home or on-the-go to improve water quality.

For example, LifeStraw, first introduced for people in developing countries without access to safe water and for victims following natural disasters, now makes a range of water filters and purifiers designed for uses like emergency preparedness, outdoor recreation, travel and everyday hydration.

The refillable LifeStraw Go water bottle features a built-in filter, and removes 99.9999 percent of waterborne bacteria (including E. coli and salmonella) and 99.9 percent of waterborne chlorine, organic chemical matter, bad taste, and muddiness.

As an added bonus for the charitably-minded, consider that improving your own water quality can have a global impact, too. One in 10 people globally lack access to safe water, according to the World Health Organization and UNICEF. Through the “Follow the Liters” humanitarian program, for each LifeStraw purchased, one school child in a developing community in Africa receives safe drinking water for an entire school year.
