PASR Meeting

The Susquehanna County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) held its fall General Membership meeting at Dreyer Hall in Montrose on October 13th. Twenty-eight members representing the county school districts were in attendance. Prior to the meeting, musical entertainment was provided by Mae Belle Golis. President John Manchester recognized the Chairs of the committees and thanked them for their efforts in promoting the work of PASR.

Janet Small (left), Community Service Chair and Karen Holbrook, Volunteer of the Year

Janet Small, Community Chair, presented the 2015 Volunteer of the Year to Karen Holbrook. Karen serves as our Member Benefits Chair and has served as a long time volunteer for the Area Agency for the Aging. She received a certificate and pin recognizing  her contributions to the Chapter and her community. We were fortunate to have Karen as our guest speaker on Medicare topics. We also collected $50 for the "Feed a Friend" program.

Ellen Holdredge, Educational Support Chair, announced that two $150 grants will be available to employees of the Montrose Area School District. One of these is in memory of Hendrick Marr, Joan Peters and Mary Ketterer. Other awards available will include a $300 enrichment grant in the Blue Ridge School District, a $225 grant for Science in the Elk Lake School District, and a $225 grant for Fine Arts in the Forest City School District. Our  scholarship will go to  a graduating senior of the  Mountain View School District and the Lauretta Woodson awards will honor two employees  of the Susquehanna Community School District.

Our annual memorial service was conducted by Barbara Bush, chair of the Social Service Memorial Honor Fund. This year there were 20 members and friends who passed away. A $100 donation will be  made to the State Social Service Memorial Fund in their memory.

Thank you notes were read from the Hop Bottom Summer Lunch Box program, the Babies and Books program of the Susquehanna  County Library, and Interfaith's Socks for Tot's and Teen's. The Chapter has made recent  donations to each of these programs. Linda Whitney, chapter member and a member of the Susquehanna County's Library Board of Directors, also thanked the association for their support and gave an update on the building status, as well as the Susquehanna County Reads  program.

Chapter members are encouraged to help "Ring the Bells" during this upcoming holiday season. If interested in helping, please contact Ruth Donnelly by email at ruth_donnelly@yahoo.com or call 570-396-2968

Pet of the Week

Valentino and his handlers

Meet Valentino, True Friend's honorary crime fighter.  His suspect apprehension techniques include drowning them with slobbery kisses and staring them down with puppy dog eyes. We know his methods are successful because he has managed to quickly win over the entire True Friends family as well as the Montrose Police Department.

This big boy is 3 years old, neutered, and  just a huge mush with a zest for life and a heart full of love.

We are so thankful to our Montrose P.D. and our community for coming together to not only fill one, but two cruisers full of food, supplies, and money to help care for all our animals.  Thank you everyone who played a part in making “Fill the Cruiser” such a huge success!

October is National Pitbull Awareness Month and because we very much love our “Pit Crew” we will be celebrating our "Pittie Party" all month long by offering 50% off their adoption fees.  Stop by to meet our wide variety of LOVE-A-BULL dogs today!

Fun Fact:  Pitbulls found in shelters are now being recruited as police officers across the country due to their high intelligence, focus, and loyalty to their partners.  Not only is this saving communities on the average $10,000 for a traditional K9 officer, but each one is saving the life of an amazing dog with the potential to be a true hero just like Valentino and all our very special Pitties at True Friends.
