Blue Ridge Takes County Envirothon

Recently the Susquehanna County Conservation District held its annual County Envirothon at Elk Mountain Ski Resort.  Nearly 140 high school students from four school districts competed in this annual event.

At the Envirothon, five-member teams participate in a series of field station tests that focus on

five topic areas – soils and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and environmental issues. The

2016 current environmental issue focused on invasive species and their potential socio-economic impact.

Technical expertise and testing was provided by the following partners: PA Department of Environmental Protection, PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, PA Game Commission, PA Fish and Boat Commission, and the U.S.D.A. Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Pictured (L-R) is the 2016 1st place Envirothon Team (Smartmouth Bass) from Blue Ridge: Ed Price (Advisor), MaryAnn Warren (County Commissioner), Allison Hewitt, Corbin French, Mikhala Griemsmann, Jessie Purdum, Isabella Cosmello, Sandra Major (State Representative).

Special congratulations go out to the winning teams: First place - ‘Smart Mouth Bass’ from Blue Ridge; second place - ‘Wetland Wombats’ also from Blue Ridge third place - ‘Sassyfras’ from Susquehanna Community School.

The three winning teams and their advisors will be rewarded for their hard work by going on an educational field trip to the Stroud Water Research Center in Avondale, Pa.

A special thank you goes out to Elk Mountain Ski Resort for once again hosting the large group for the day.
