Art Exhibit To Be On Display

The Butternut Gallery & Second Story Books invites everyone to come and vote for their favorite work in focus—exploring our regional sense of place, the eighth annual exhibit of paintings, photographs and three-dimensional pieces by area artists. This year, 54 artists submitted work, and the jurors selected 80 pieces for the exhibit. focus will open to the public on Saturday, May 21—the day of the Montrose Chocolate & Wine Festival, that annual celebration of local good living just a half block away in downtown Montrose. focus will remain on view through June 5 during regular gallery hours: Wednesday-Saturday 11am-5pm.

This year’s focus exhibit artists competed for more than $4,500 in prizes, inlcuding the $1,000 Best In Show award, two People’s Choice Awards, the Chocolate & Wine Festival Award, and first place winners in several media. Awards will be made public on May 21, with the exception of the People’s Choice Awards, which will be proclaimed after all public votes have been tallied on June 5.

A portion of the gallery proceeds from the focus exhibit will be donated to the Chocolate & Wine Festival’s charitable causes.

Nancy Wottrich At Shelly Wetlands

The 400-acre nature preserve, Florence Shelly Wetlands, Thompson, PA, is recognized as an ecological niche of uncommon diversity, and on Sunday, May 29, at 2:00 PM, participants on a guided nature walk will discover both rare and common wildflowers hidden among leaves, clustered along streambeds, nestled against rocky outcroppings, and even feeding on insects in a bog. The walk will be led by Nancy Wottrich, a local naturalist and environmental educator whose expertise is matched only by her energetic sense of adventure.

Nancy invites participants to explore how the plants grow, why they flourish in particular places and not in others, and what challenges they’re facing from insects, invasive plant species, and even poaching by garden enthusiasts. She will have field guides on hand and will help you learn shortcuts to identifying flowers by leaves, stalks, and colors, so you don’t have to flip through an entire guidebook to find the plant you’re admiring.

The walk will include Weirs Pond, a glacial quaking bog where carnivorous pitcher plants should be in bloom. Tucked among ancient sedimentary rocks you are likely to discover two rare species of wildflower, yellow clintonia and twisted rosy stalk. This is also a perfect time to spot the extravagantly beautiful Lady’s Slippers hidden in the woods. There will be many additional surprises as well.

The walk is scheduled to last two hours, with an optional extra hour of wildflower viewing possible for enthusiasts.

Nancy Wottrich has been in the field of environmental education and interpretive natural history since 1980. She has a Masters degree in Environmental Studies and has worked with all age groups, teaching about natural history by using the whole-ecology approach that considers species in the context of their surroundings. She has been actively involved with Salt Springs State Park and does biological surveys in the fields of land protection and land trust. Since 2001 she has worked as environmental consultant in Susquehanna County. She has been leading walks at Florence Shelly Wetlands Preserve for several years.

The wildflower walk is free of charge and we’ll go if it rains, so bring rain gear if necessary. Even if the sun is out, it’s a good idea to wear waterproof shoes, since we’ll be walking in a wetland. The walk is free and no reservations are required. Although the terrain in the preserve is quite flat, it is extremely uneven in places, with hidden stones and tree roots jutting into the trail.

Meet at 2:00 PM at the preserve parking lot one mile north of Thompson on Route 171, at the point where Stack Road intersects. A sign marks the entrance. For more information call Trebbe Johnson at 570/396-0293.
