Montrose Educators Call For Strike

Montrose Education Association (MEA) was forced into the position of withholding their services starting Tuesday, March 29. The MEA met in good faith with the school board to work out some final issues on the new contract and avoid the work stoppage on March 29. Unfortunately, the school board, led by their chief negotiator instead offered a different contract proposal that was regressive and unfair to the educators.

James Maria, PSEA Representative said, “MEA was pretty clear that they wanted to work out solutions with the school board last night and avoid the strike. Unfortunately, we believe the school board’s chief negotiator, Attorney John Audi led them in another direction and a wrong direction.”

Maria stated, “Basically, the school board had asked MEA a while ago to consider a deal that would fund salary increases and improvements through savings from a change in health care plans. The simple idea was to take the savings from the new plan and use them to pay for increases to salaries in the district. After months and months of work that brought the sides remarkably close to a new contract, the school board changed course with its regressive contract offer.”

“Unfortunately, the long delays between negotiating sessions and the reluctance of the board to embrace its own plan have made it impossible to realize any savings in health care for the current school year. The direct consequence of the many delays is that there is no savings in health care to be realized this year. The board has abandoned a potential savings of $583,000 by saying it is too late to change plans this year. They blame the teachers for not accepting the board’s offers. They need to take responsibility for their own actions. We know that MEA’s contract proposal is fair, reasonable and an affordable deal. We will continue to try to reach a settlement that is fair to all. We ask that you encourage the board to do the same,” said Maria.

Endowment To Be Awarded to SCCTC

President of the Community Foundation of the Endless Mountains, recently presented a check for $750.00 to the Susquehanna County Career & Technology Center to support the expenses of the Practical Nursing program. The donation was due to the generosity of Mr. Joseph Yakoski, in memory of his beloved wife, Diane. Diane was a LPN and worked locally for many years at Tyler Memorial Hospital. Her love and devotion to helping people was clear to all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Pictured (L-R) are: SCCTC Financial Aid Coordinator Mrs. Tammi Mowry, Community Foundation President Mr. Peter Quigg, Mr. Joseph Yakoski, Dr. Alice M. Davis, SCCTC Executive Director.

Diane would be honored to know that this permanent endowment will provide annual support to a program that trains local students who also aspire to devote their lives to this selfless profession. Hopefully this endowment will have the same impact on the recipient as Diane had on her patients’ lives.  This new endowment is similar to two others managed by The Community Foundation that provide similar support to The Career and Technology Center.  The Bondurant Family Fund assists with the expenses of the Automotive Department and the Jane & Leopold Schreiber Fund assists with the expenses of the Culinary Department.

Dr. Alice M. Davis, Executive Director at the SCCTC, stated, “I can’t thank Mr. Yakoski enough for his support of the SCCTC Practical Nurse program. The Diane Yakoski Fund will surely make dreams come true for our nursing students as they embark on their professional journeys.”
