SCCTC FUN Club
Submitted by Tina Decker
The Susquehanna County Career & Technology Center sponsored a 6-week F.U.N. Club for sixth-grade students in the Elk Lake School District this past Fall.
F.U.N. (Fitness United with Nutrition) Club leaders were Mrs. Jessica Warner, SCCTC Massage Therapy instructor and Miss Katelin Erb, SCCTC School Counselor. Both ladies volunteered their time for this after school activity. They helped students develop skills for making healthy eating and physical activity choices.

Picture (l – r) are: Alexia Jones, Angelia Boner, Allison Orr and Emily Salsman.
During the 6-week program, the students engaged in activities that were food related, action packed, and relevant to their everyday lives. Each day included 30 minutes of physical activity and preparation of a healthy snack. The students also had journals where they logged their physical activity, smart food choices and water intake.
Each week focused on a different goal. Week one included a talk about the benefits of being physically active and ways to make being physically active fun. The second week, the students learned to identify common measures such as 1 cup, 1⁄2 cup, 1 tablespoon, etc., and how to use food labels to make informed food choices. Week three focused on the “my plate” concept and emphasized portion control. Weeks four and five had the students using food labels to make healthful snack choices, and explaining how to eat more fruits, vegetables, and low-fat or fat free foods at fast-food places. Also, they learned how to describe hunger cues. During the last week, the instructors encouraged the kids to try foods they’ve never tasted before. For the last evening, students set up a showcase for parents/guardians and prepared tasty snacks for everyone. The program ended with a graduation ceremony and presentation of certificates of completion.
Dr. Alice M. Davis, Executive Director of the SCCTC, is extremely grateful for the time and energy that the instructors put into this F.U.N. program, and she looks forward to future wellness programs designed to promote a healthy lifestyle.
