LEXINGTON- Clarence R. Benson, 93, of Lexington, SC passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2016 after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held Friday, February 12, 2016 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church with entombment in Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family received friends at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
Mr. Benson was born April 7, 1922 in Susquehanna, PA. to the late, Fred S. Benson and Iona Carpenter Benson. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Mr. Benson served in the United States Army during WWII in the European Theatre. He retired after 30 years at Bendix Corporation and was a lifetime member of the American Legion, VFW, Disabled Veterans of America, Knights of Columbus and the Columbia Chamber of Commerce. He was an active member of Alston Wilkes Society and St. Vincent De Paul Society. He volunteered at the Lexington Medical Center, Lexington Extended Care and Carroll Campbell Center.
Mr. Benson is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Josephine Alerio Benson of Lexington; daughter, Celia Gumaer of Lexington; son, Frederick R. Benson (Linda) of Charlotte; daughter, Mary Jane Murphy (Harold) of Gilbert; Joanne Roland (Randy) of Leesville; grandchildren, Michael Hightower, Stephanie Olmstead, William Gumaer, Colleen Cortright and two great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by a son, Edward J. Benson.
