Blue Ridge Art Represents School

Blue Ridge's art program was well represented at the Pennsylvania School Board Association's Education Excellence Fair on Wednesday, October 14, 2015. The conference was held at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, PA.

Pictured (l-r) are HS art teacher Sarrah Dibble-Camburn, Madison Carpenter, Lillian Bleck and elementary art teacher Yana Hannah.

This is the third year the Blue Ridge art program has participated in the education fair.  Fifth graders, Madison Carpenter and Lillian Bleck helped showcase the cross curricular art projects.  The students handed out flyers that explain how our students are "Smart with Art".  They discussed art projects and experiences with conference attendees.  Sarrah Dibble-Camburn, along with the new Elementary Art Teacher, Yana Hannah, were there to answer any questions about the program. Artsonia, the school's online art gallery and a slide show of student work and project examples was displayed at the table. Please visit blueridgeart.weebly.com to view the slide show.

Susky School WNEP Trip

Going from watching at home to being behind the scenes at WNEP News Station gave students at Susquehanna Community High School a whole new perspective on watching the news.

On October 15, Mrs. Carpenter’s Dual Enrollment English 12 class had the opportunity to shadow meteorologist, Tom Clark, and the journalist, Marisa Burke, at the WNEP News Station.

Pictured (l-r) are: Cori Glidden, Dan Braun, Michael Armitage, Baily Barnes, Jessica Staros, Alyssa Rockwell, Nicole Sherman, Miranda Rhone, Miranda Groover, Alyssa Hubal, Rachel Serfilippi, Breanna Bushong.

Due to the incorporation of journalism into the English 12 course, including Sabers News Network and the school newspaper, the seniors had an opportunity to talk to real journalists at the WNEP News Station. The twelve students who attended this trip used it as an educational experience to help them improve SNN and the school newspaper.

“I feel like I learned a lot from this trip. It was a very inspiring experience,” said senior Jessi Staros.

Touring the newsroom, being on the air with Tom Clark, and watching Marisa Burke finish the noon news segment allowed the students to get a feel for a professional version of a news station and how much effort goes into making one news segment.

“I feel like it taught us various aspects of journalism and will help us engage our audience,” is how senior Miranda Rhone described the trip.

Thanks to the Mentor Program and the O’Neil Foundation, the English 12 class greatly enjoyed the chance to tour the WNEP News Station.
