Bowl For Hope Gets Boost From Youth
Submitted by Rebecca Warholic
With almost one hundred hours between the two of them, Elk Lake students Jordan Clark and Zach Osborn worked hard creating twenty-five plaques for Maplewood Lane’s second annual “Bowl for Hope.” Jordan, a junior, and Zach, a senior, got to work preparing the plaques for the winners of the bowling tournament (which was set for mid-April) after Elk Lake’s woodshop was contacted for their help by Fundraiser Coordinator Nicole Rogers from the OI Foundation. Ms. Rogers helped Mike Cotton organize this fundraiser. “We wanted to help out and give the students an opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge they’ve learned in the classroom to a real world application,” said Industrial Arts teacher Craig Good.

Senior Zach Osborn and junior Jordan Clark show off the plaques they made for the Bowl for Hope fundraiser
The fundraiser was to raise awareness of Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), better known as Brittle Bone Disease. Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a “disorder characterized by fragile bones that break easily.” Rogers specifically contacted Elk Lake High School because Mike Cotton, the chairman of the fundraiser which took place in South Montrose, is an Elk Lake alumni who graduated in 1997. Cotton’s daughter died, at only five years old of Brittle Bone Disease. Therefore, the Foundation reached out for Elk Lake’s help; the faculty and students were needed for a donation of their time and resources in order to assist in this attempt for even more public attention to the tournament and subsequent fundraising for this important cause.
Jordan and Zach both worked persistently in order to contribute. Over the duration of the project, each boy had his own distinct part in creating the plaques. Jordan did everything that had to be completed in the wood shop while Zach did all the work in the metal shop. Jordan cut, sanded, and put finish on pine wood for the base of all twenty-five plaques. Zach utilized plasma cutting, using the shop’s impressive CNC (computerized numerical control) plasma torch, to create and cut out the metal design that is now on the front of the plaques. He first had to set up the design on the computer controlling the plasma torch by measuring, arcing, and placing the design. In fact, making it so that the design would fit the wooden plaque once all the metal was cut out took up much of his time. Producing the sheet metal letters actually took up the most time, and Jordan helped here as well by cleaning each of the letters after they were cut out by the torch and gluing them onto the plaques. Their hard work paid off in the well crafted plaques.
