Girl Scout Summer Camp
May 3, 2012 (KINGSLEY, PA) – An exciting camping opportunity is available this summer to all girls in grades 2-10. Girls and their parents are invited to join Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania (GSHPA) to find out more about it at our Summer Camp Open House at Camp Archbald in Kingsley, PA, on Sunday, May 20 from 1 to 4 pm.
As the school year is winding down, many girls and their parents are beginning to think about how they will spend their vacations and planning summer activities. What better way to get the summer started than making new friends, singing songs around the campfire and taking on bold new adventures? This year marks the last chance for Girl Scouts to go camping during the first 100 years of Girl Scouting. And traditions are strong at Camp Archbald, the second oldest Girl Scout Camp in America!
Girl Scout Summer Camp offers a wide variety of fun, exciting and enriching activities for girls to choose from so they can make each day at camp their own new adventure and create memories that will last a lifetime. By attending the Summer Camp Open House, girls and their parents can learn all about activities planned for this year’s campers, which include:
Horseback riding, Rock climbing walls, Archery, Boating and canoeing, Arts and crafts, Wildlife observation, Swimming, Off-site trips to local attractions, Hiking, And much more!
What is Summer Camp Open House?
GSHPA’s free open house is an informal meeting designed to give girls and their parents a perfect opportunity to see what Girl Scout Camp is all about and is held at the actual property where girls will attend camp. This makes it easy for a girl to tour the camp facilities, meet camp staff, ask questions and get an up close and personal look at where she may potentially spend part of her summer. It can also help first-time campers and their parents who are uncertain about spending a week away from home by getting a better feel for the camping experience.
But my Daughter is not a Girl Scout; can she still go to camp?
We’d be happy to have you! Girl Scout Summer Camp is open to all girls in grades 2-10, not just Girl Scouts. If a girl has a friend in Girl Scouts and she would like to join her at camp, or if she just wants to attend camp on her own, she is welcome to come to our open house to learn more about Girl Scout Camps.
Please keep in mind that the open house will be held rain or shine, so dress accordingly and comfortably for walking outside. To register to attend or to request more information, please, call 1.800.692.7816 or email camp@gshpa.org.
GSHPA serves more than 27,000 girls in 30 counties in Pennsylvania and welcomes adults interested in volunteering and all girls in grades K-12, embracing every aspect of diversity. For more information visit our website at www.gshpa.org.

Lakeside Players To Present Comedy
Every day, over 40 million Americans do crossword puzzles. And every day, millions of Americans also ride commuter trains. The Lakeside Players’ newest production, “2 Across,” explores what happens when a man and a woman, each engrossed in a crossword puzzle, find themselves the only passengers in a commuter train car at 4:30 a.m.

The train is a Bay Area Rapid Transit going from the San Francisco airport to the end of the line in Bay Point. But Janet and Josh are doing the New York Times crossword puzzle. Janet is an organized, sensible psychologist. Josh is a free-spirited, unemployed ad exec. She’s a crossword pro; he always quits. When he tosses his puzzle away, she snaps, “Crosswords are a metaphor for life. Those who finish, succeed, those who don’t, fail.” That’s when Josh vows to finish.
Thus starts an 80-minute theatrical ride where two opposites in an enclosed space go from witty banter to raw emotion as they attack each other’s values; then begin to be swayed and intrigued by them. As Janet and Josh reveal more about their lives, they discover they’re both at a crossroads. Their train ride is filled with unpredictable but believable surprises, as they offer solutions to each other’s problems. When the train ride ends, each of them has been changed for the better. And we’re dying to know, will they meet again?
The play, written by Jerry Mayer, is billed as “a comedy of crosswords and romance.” The critics called it “A witty, poignant play with intriguing plot twists and surprises” (Palisades-Post) and “The must see play of the year, witty, mesmerizing (Beverly Hills Lookout).
“2 Across” stars Roxan Schwartz as Janet and Frank DeSando as Josh. Schwartz is directing. The play will run on May 11, 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 at Lakeville Community Hall, Route 590, Lakeville (between the firehouse and the United Methodist Church).
Founded in 1999, The Lakeside Players are recipients of numerous awards from the Northeastern Pennsylvania Theatrical Alliance (NEPTA). Awards include Best Original Production, Best Comedy, Best Director of a Comedy, Best Actor in a Comedy, Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy and Best Supporting Actress in a Drama, for their 2010 and 2011 hits “Double Occupancy,” “Fawlty Towers Revisited,” “Bermuda Avenue Triangle” and “The Book of Murder.”

Vote For Your Work In Focus
Submitted by: Melissa Haertsch
MONTROSE, PA—The Butternut Gallery & Second Story Books invites everyone to come and vote for their favorite work in focus—exploring our regional sense of place, the fourth annual juried exhibit of paintings, photographs and three-dimensional pieces by our talented area artists. Focus will open to the public on Saturday, May 19, the day of the Chocolate & Wine Festival, that annual celebration of local good living just a half block away in Montrose. The gallery will be open special hours that day, 11am-7pm.
Focus will remain on view through June 2 during regular gallery hours, Wednesday-Saturday 11am-5pm.
Focus is a highly competitive exhibit that received more than 120 entries this year, of which seventy-two will be included in the exhibit. The judges included John Anthony, Earl Lehman and Max Henri. More than $4,000 in prizes will be awarded to winning artists, including the Chocolate & Wine Award, sponsored by the Chocolate & Wine Festival, to honor the best depiction of those delectable substances. Winners will be announced May 19, except for the People’s Choice Award, for which the public can submit votes until June 2. On that day, the People’s Choice will be announced. All gallery proceeds from the focus exhibit will be donated to the Endless Mountains Health System, Susquehanna County Historical Society and Free Library Association, the Leopold and Jane Schreiber Endowment Fund and the “seedling” Greenhouse Project.
