Students Raise Money For International Relief Two local Rotary Club exchange students, after hearing of the tsunami disaster in Japan, decided to take action. Elena Roessle, a student from Ahrensburg, Germany hosted by the New Milford Area Rotary Club, and Julia Kalluf from Curitiba, Brazil, hosted by the Montrose Rotary Club, enlisted in the Rotary Youth Exchange ShelterBox Challenge. Assisted by advisors, Rotarians Kate Kurosky and Melody Haley, they committed themselves to a campaign to raise the money to meet the ShelterBox challenge. Pictured (l-r) above: Melody Haley, Julia Kalluf, Elena Roessle and Kate Kurosky. ShelterBox responds instantly to disasters all around the world delivering aid as quickly as possible to the people who need it most. Each ShelterBox contains the essentials a family needs to survive in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. While the boxes are tailored to a particular disaster, each typically contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, water storage and purification equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items. Each donation is allocated to a specific box that is individually numbered. This means that supporters can trace their donation and discover where their contribution is helping a family, who otherwise, may have had nothing. Each box costs $1000 delivered. Elena and Julia each raised enough money to pay for one ShelterBox by giving presentations to local organizations and schools. Elena says she has given her presentation more than 40 times and was heartened by the generous response. One class, Mrs. Mary Niemotka's 7th graders from Mountain View, gave over $300 in "Pennies from Heaven." The girls’ achievement will be recognized at the Rotary International Convention Youth Exchange Officers Pre-convention meeting in New Orleans on May 21.
