HEADLINES: Reverend Larry Thomas, Senior Pastor of the South New Milford Baptist Church, New Milford, PA received from Davis College (formerly Practical Bible Training School), Johnson City, NY an Honorary Doctorate Degree. This was presented at the Davis College Commencement Service on May 14, 2011. Larry Thomas (pictured above) grew up in the Madisonville Christian Church in Moscow, PA. He believed and received Jesus Christ as his Savior at age 11 while attending daily vacation Bible school. After graduation from high school he went to Practical Bible Training School to prepare for future ministry. Upon graduating from PBTS in May, 1966, Larry received a call from the Flat Creek Baptist Church in Gilboa, NY to be their Pastor. In August he married Evelyn Hunt, also a PBTS graduate in 1966. In April of 1972 Larry received a call from the Evergreen Christian Church and the Moxie Community Church to be their Pastor. These churches are members of the Tioga River Christian Conference, a group of churches in NE Pennsylvania and New York State. Pastor Thomas was President of the conference for several years. Larry has also served as a member of the advisory board at Practical Bible Training School and as a member of the Board of Directors of Lahore Bible Institute of Sheikhupura, Pakistan. In October, 1984, God called Larry to the South New Milford Baptist Church in New Milford Pennsylvania. In November, 2009, Pastor Thomas was honored for 25 years of service at SNMBC. Pastor Thomas is a cancer survivor, and is still preaching and praying for the souls of men, women and children 24/7 for the glory of God. In May of 2010, Pastor celebrated being in the pastoral ministry for 45 years. The Lord has blessed the Thomas’ with 2 daughters, 3 sons and 13 “grands.” Sunday Vespers, a monthly ecumenical service of worship, will be held June 12, 5:00 p.m., at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, corner of Church and Chestnut Streets, Montrose. Vespers is a traditional, ecumenical evening service which includes prayers, time for silent meditation, readings, reflections and music. Mary Lee Fitzgerald will welcome the guests and Douglas Sivers will be the reader for the service. Special music for this service will be provided by the “Note-a-Bell” hand bell choir of Hallstead. This group has been together for more than 20 years. The choir is a four octave, ecumenical group of members of many local congregations of the Hallstead area, directed by Marsha Maroney. The program will consist of “Breathe,” arranged by Derek K. Hakes; “Freely, Freely,” arranged by Susan E. Geschke; “You Raise Me Up,” arranged by Sandra Eithun; and “Be Still and Know,” arranged by Douglas Wagner. Mary Ann DeWitt will serve as organist for the service. A simple meal will follow the service in the Parish House.
