Senior Thomas Jordan has been selected as the Montrose Area High School Scholar of the Year. He was to be interviewed on radio Sunday, May 1 at 12:00 p.m. on the University of Scranton Radio Station WUSR-99.5 FM. The Scholar of the Year Program is sponsored by the Northeast Educational Intermediate Unit #19 and WUSR - 99.5 FM. One senior student from each high school in the intermediate unit is selected on the basis of academic excellence, leadership, and citizenship. In addition to the broadcast interviews, the scholars and their parents will be honored at a banquet at the end of the school year. Thomas is the son of Richard and Maureen Jordan of Montrose. Thomas is involved in many school and community activities. He is President of the Senior Class and a member of the National Honor Society, for which he is part of the peer tutoring program, French Honor Society and Captain of the Scholastic Team, Advanced Placement Club. As a sophomore, Thomas was the Montrose Area High School representative to the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Congress. Thomas has been nominated by faculty and administration for People to People, Lead America for Global Entrepreneurship, Who’s Who in English, National Society of High School Scholars, National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security and as the Rensselaer Medalist. He has also been featured in local news for successfully producing carbon nanotubes in his metal shop classes. He has earned varsity letters in cross-country and enjoys fencing and forging/blacksmithing, as well as taking part in the school Drama Club plays and activities. Thomas plans to attend the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering , University at Albany. Faculty and staff are proud to present Thomas as the Montrose Area High School Scholar of the Year for 2010-2011.
Elk Lake Elementary Students Of The Month Mr. Charles Pirone, Elementary Principal of the Elk Lake School is pleased to announce the April 2011 student of the month award winners. Millersville University Graduates Announced MILLERSVILLE, PA - The following area students graduated from Millersville University of Pennsylvania during the spring 2011 undergraduate commencement ceremony held Saturday, May 7. Janelle Elizabeth Tweedy, Scott Township, Bachelor of Science in Math, Magna Cum Laude; Adam Walter Walker, Nicholson, Bachelor of Science in Speech Communication; Melissa I. Ainey, New Milford, Bachelor of Arts in Sociology.
Lock Haven University Graduates Announced LOCK HAVEN, PA - Over 700 students received degrees from Lock Haven University during 2011 spring commencement ceremonies. A total of 619 candidates for bachelor and master's degrees participated in the ceremonies for College of Education and Human Services and the College of Arts and Sciences on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7. In addition, 85 bachelor and associate degree students received degrees on Wednesday, May 4 at the university's Clearfield Campus. President Barbara B. Dixon presented degrees to the following local students: John J. Delfino Jr., Greenfield Twp., Bachelor of Science; Amanda N. Miner, Meshoppen, Bachelor of Arts; Brandon Michael Wilson, Meshoppen, Bachelor of Science; Nathan R. Calabro, New Milford, Bachelor of Science in Education; Jessica M. Ellis, Susquehanna, Bachelor of Science in Education; Nicole Theresa Tarbox, Susquehanna, Bachelor of Arts.
SCCTC Instructor Receives Honors At a breakfast buffet in Harrisburg sponsored by the Pennsylvania Association for Career & Technical Education (PA-ACTE), Gary Fenton, Worksite Coordinator at the Susquehanna County Career & Technology Center (SCCTC), received his certificate for being a “Outstanding New Career & Technical Education Teacher.” Mr. Fenton was recognized in June at the Pennsylvania Career & Technical Education Conference (PACTEC) Conference in Lancaster. Mr. Fenton (pictured above) is the Worksite Coordinator at the SCCTC working in partnership with the Carpentry and Electrical programs on building and construction projects. Mr. Fenton and the Carpentry & Cabinetmaking and Electrical, Plumbing & Heating classes are currently working on construction of a new pavilion on the school campus along with a third student-built house. According to Dr. Alice M. Davis, SCCTC Administrative Director, “Mr. Fenton has been an outstanding addition to our staff at the SCCTC. Forensics Team Strong At Southern Lehigh The Elk Lake Forensics Team wrapped up its invitational tournament season in the same way it began it, by dominating the competition at the 15th Annual Spartan Invitational Tournament at Southern Lehigh High School on April 30. All three EL Forensics Team members advanced to the elimination rounds at the tournament against the top debaters from eastern PA, Philadelphia and New Jersey. EL Place-Winners at the Spartan Invitational Tournament: Austin Cohen, 3rd place in PF Debate; Richard Guiton, 4th place in LD Debate; Shea Skinner, 3rd place in Public Forum Debate. Competing for the first time ever in Public Forum, the team of Shea Skinner and Austin Cohen compiled an undefeated 4 win and 0 loss record during the preliminary rounds by defeating teams from Montville (NJ), Moravian Academy, and Ridge (NJ) high schools and advanced to the Quarter-Finals. In Quarter-Finals, they defeated Scranton High School, a team that had advanced to Quarter-Finals at States and qualified to NCFL Nationals. In Semi-Finals, the winning streak ended as they lost a split decision to a very strong team from Pennsbury High School and placed 3rd overall. Not to be outdone, in Lincoln-Douglas Debate junior Richard Guiton complied a 3 win and 1 loss record during the preliminary rounds by defeating debaters from Meyers, Southern Lehigh, and Perkiomen Valley high schools. His only loss came at the hands of Zach Taylor from Barrack Hebrew Academy. Guiton advanced to Quarter-Finals, as the 3rd seeded debater, where he defeated Krysti Oschal from Dallas High School and advanced to Semi-Finals. Guiton lost a close split decision in Semi-Finals to Howard Wei, the eventual LD champion, from Ridge High School and placed 4th overall. “This was a great end to a great season. For Shea (Skinner) it was a great end to a great career,” commented EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious. Senior Shea Skinner wrapped up his forensics career for Elk Lake at the tournament at which it all began in 2006. Guiton and Cohen will be heading to the National Catholic Forensics League Grand National Tournament on Memorial Day Weekend in Washington D.C. to compete against the top 200 Lincoln-Douglas Debaters in the country.
STAUNTON, VA - Perri Weldy of Starrucca received the following award(s) at Mary Baldwin College's spring Honors Convocation: Melissa S. Mitchell Award for Excellence in Asian Studies. Swinburne Visits Susky Elementary Stephen Swinburne, author of over 25 children’s books, visited the Susquehanna Elementary School on April 8. One of his books, “Whose Shoes? A Shoe for Every Job,” won this year’s Pennsylvania's One Book, Every Young Child 2011 selection. He was greeted by Mrs. Jeannye Glidden, the Susquehanna Elementary Librarian and escorted by Mary Beth Manns, Outreach Librarian. K-4, K-5, 1st grade and numerous teachers had the pleasure of his company. Mr. Swinburne’s presentation consisted of a powerpoint, playing the ukulele, and singing. Steve had his audience laughing and singing throughout his 40 minute presentation. The students and staff were delighted by his storytelling of how many shoes (jobs) he had during his life time - with his favorite job being an author. He ended his presentation telling the children how important it is for them to keep on reading because it makes them smarter. Elk Lake High School Students Of The Month Kenneth F. Students of the month are selected by nominations of any student in grades 10-12 by a teacher for outstanding achievement. The student must show individual effort, community and school wide effort, as well as effort in the classroom. Other important criteria includes: a showing of personal growth, skill development, dedication, leadership, academic growth and improvement, school service and community service.
Arbor Day Celebration At Choconut Valley The annual Arbor Day Celebration took place at Choconut Valley Elementary School on April 29. This event, sponsored by the Choconut Valley Garden Club, has been taking place for many years. The club has planted and maintained all the landscaping around the school grounds since the school was established. As part of the celebration, memorials are presented by the Choconut Valley Elementary staff to continue the development of the beatification project. This year memorials were presented in memory of Alberta Hall, Melissa Severcool Lorence and Walter DeRose. Mrs. Hall was a bus driver who transported students to the school for over 30 years. Melissa and Walter had been students at the Choconut school. Memorials from the Hall and Severcool families were read. Musical presentations were presented by all of the grade levels con ducted by Mackenzie Anderson, musical director at the school. Speakers included: Jennifer Anderson, County Recycling Center; Jim Garner, County Soil Conservation; Dave Cole, Forester; and Sandy Babuka representing Salt Springs.
ELESPA Helps Seniors Get College Credits The Elk Lake Educational Support Personnel Association is proud to announce a new project for the upcoming 2011/2012 school year. The Elk Lake School has been able to provide financial means for all students, who qualify, to take classes at Elk Lake and earn college credits in previous years. Those funds were received through a grant from the state. At this time, the grant will not be available. Seeing the need, the ELESPA will provide $2,000 for this project. Fourteen students will be assisted with the cost for a dual enrollment class from these funds. These students will earn college credits when taking a class at Elk Lake during their senior year. The ELESPA is happy to provide $2,000 for this project. The ELESPA has always been proud to support students in their educational needs. It is felt this will be a very rewarding project for both the ELESPA and seniors.
