Windjammer “Mystic Whaler” under sail near Mystic, CT - a 110 foot schooner the Sea Scouts will sail on board this summer!

Eleven Sea Scouts from Ship 90 will join other Sea Scouts from the North-East for a hands on sailing adventure on Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean for four days, beginning September 2. They will learn sail handling, navigation and piloting, marlinspike seamanship, rules of the road, charting, first aid, weather distress signals and emergency drills such as fire, man overboard and abandon ship!

Adult officers attending from Sea Scout Ship 90 will be skipper Chuck Jaget and first mate Helen Reed.

This tall ship adventure is in addition to the 5 day white water canoe trip on the Delaware River in June, and 9 days of sailing two 30 foot sailboats out of Lewes, Delaware on Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean in July.

Have nothing exciting to do this summer, join the Sea Scouts! For more information, call 465-3218.

PARSE Update
Submitted By Cynthia Sims

The Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees held their first meeting of 2011 on April 12 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Dushore.

The guest speaker was Gerald T. Coyne, Registered Representative of PSECU Financial Services. He spoke to the group about investments through the credit union.

Membership Chairman Benio advised that 2011 PARSE dues were to be paid by May 1 in order to retain membership in the dental and eye care programs.

As PARSE, Chapter 15 had voted to hold only three meetings per year, the next meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 12, at Green Gables, New Milford. All Pennsylvania state retirees are invited to attend to learn more about PARSE. The organization is dedicated to preserving retirees’ pensions and health benefits.

For more information and/or to make reservations for the July meeting contact President Jesse Bacon at 570-265-9785 or Susquehanna Co. Vice President John Benio at 570-278-2380.

Sizzlin' Steaks

Our first Sizzlin' Steaks meeting was held on April Fools' Day at the Harvatine's house. The 4-Her's who attended were Holly Harvatine, David Bradshaw, Corey and Kayla Borove, and Alyssa and Evan Clarkson.

Our group decided to go from house to house with our meetings this year, instead of going to United Church of Christ in Harford. At this meeting our leader helped us get enrolled on the computer. Holly and Julie Harvatine made a delicious cake with an assortment of drinks for our refreshments.

Born To Show

The Born To Show 4-H Club recently held their first meeting. The meeting started with election of officers: President, Trevor Tompkins; Vice President, Evan Castrogiovanni; Secretary, Douglas Brooks; Treasurer, Alex Bonavita; News Reporter, Sam Ely; and Social Chairs, Mariah Tompkins and Jared Brooks. Members completed 4-H enrollment for the new year and discussed some dates for the 4-H club year.

The club discussed possible fundraisers and decided to have a bake sale at Tractor Supply on Saturday, June 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members practiced their dairy judging skills by entering the Hoard’s Dairyman Judging Contest.

The Born To Show 4-H Club’s second meeting was on April 15. The club discussed participating in the “Walk for a Cure” for Juvenile Diabetes at the Montrose Pump-n-Pantry for our community service project. Our 4-H club strongly believes in helping the people of our country, especially youth who suffer from diabetes.

Sizzlin’ Steaks

Our second Sizzlin' Steaks 4-H Meeting was held at the Harvatine's house on April 15. Our group decided to chip into our savings and spend some money on white binders for everyone's projects. We will be able to decorate them any way we want, so they will look amazing for the Harford Fair.

The people who attended this meeting were Autumn Whitehead, Holly Harvatine, and Alyssa and Evan Clarkson. The major part of this meeting was picking club officers. Our President is Davis Bradshaw, Vice President is Corey Borove, Treasurer is Olivia Zick, Secretary and News Reporter is Alyssa Clarkson, Photographer is Autumn Whitehead and Game Leader is Blaize Whitehead and Evan Clarkson.

Holly Harvatine did her first demonstration on making rice krispie treats. Everybody had them for a snack with an assortment of drinks.

Our next meeting will be held at Maplewood Cemetery at 6:30 p.m. We will be planting flowers on the Veterans graves for our community project, which will be on May 20. The rain date is May 27. Our refreshments will be enjoyed at the Lenox Dairy Bar.

Clover Club

The 4-H Clover Club of Brackney recently hosted, at the Silver Lake Firehouse, an all day Multi-County sewing project called “Little Dresses and Britches for Africa” made from donated pillowcases. Under the direction of Leaders Sheryl Boyle, Beth Everitt and Joan Webster and some parents, the girls completed 10 sundresses and 2 pair of britches which will be sent to Africa with Jan Cohen at the Susquehanna County 4-H office in June. Pictured (l-r) above are Katie Warner, Betsy Warner and Tracy Sephton.

The girls enjoyed a noon time presentation given by junior Jennifer Davis (pictured above) who is making patriotic quilt tops for disabled veterans as her senior project at the Montrose Area High School. She told how she wrote to companies all over the U.S. and who donated the material. She showed many finished quilt tops, each different and beautiful. Fun was had by all who attended. More sundresses and britches will be at Multi-County Fashion Review on Thursday, June 30 at 1:00 at Dryer Hall in Montrose.
