Alison Dombroski Receives Scholarship SPRINGFIELD, MA - On April 14, Alison Dombroski of Forest City received the 2011 Springfield College Friends in Humanics Scholarship, at the college's 85th Stepping Up Day ceremonies. Dombroski, a second-year student whose major field of study is communications/sports journalism, received the presentation from Robert Barkman, distinguished Springfield College professor of humanics. The Friends in Humanics Scholarship is awarded to a Springfield College student who demonstrates the humanics philosophy through contributions on and off the campus. Humanics focuses on education of the whole person - spirit, mind and body - for leadership in service to humanity.
ANNVILLE, PA - Mr. Dylan D. Reed of Montrose, a sophomore history and political science major, received the Elizabeth M. Geffen Scholarship in History and American Studies at Lebanon Valley College's annual Spring Awards Banquet on April 28. The banquet is part of the Celebration of Student Learning, a showcase of the scholarly, scientific, and creative accomplishments of Lebanon Valley College students.
Emily Carmody To Attend HOBY Seminar Emily Carmody has been selected to join 245 leaders representing many high schools from throughout central and northeast Pennsylvania at the Central Pennsylvania Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar (HOBY) from May 19-22, at Millersville University. Representing Susquehanna Community High School, Emily is the daughter of Mark and Robin Carmody of Thompson. For the past 53 years, HOBY Leadership Seminars have brought together select groups of high school sophomores to interact with groups of distinguished leaders in business, government, and education to discuss present and future issues in an enthusiastic learning environment. HOBY was established by the veteran actor Hugh O’Brian following a visit to Africa where he was inspired by a meeting with Dr. Albert Schweitzer. Says O’Brian, “HOBY’s goal is to seek out, recognize, and develop outstanding leadership potential among our nation’s youth.” Further information about HOBY activities is available by visiting www.hoby.org or www.centralpahoby.org.
LCCC Announces Course Registration Luzerne County Community College will offer courses during its summer session in Susquehanna and Elk Lake. Registration for courses in Susquehanna will be held at Susquehanna Community High School on Wednesday, May 11, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Registration for classes in Elk Lake will be held at Elk Lake High School on Tuesday, May 10, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Classes begin on Wednesday, June 1 and end on Thursday, August 4. Final exams will be held from Monday, August 8 through Thursday, August 11. Courses scheduled to be offered in Susquehanna include Chemistry, English, Math, Psychology, Sociology, and Speech. Lock Haven Awards Area Students LOCK HAVEN, PA - Over 200 students received academic honors and scholarship awards at Lock Haven University's annual Gerald R. Robinson Academic Honors and Foundation Awards Convocation. The ceremony took place on Sunday, April 17 in Price Performance Center. The convocation is a highlight of the academic year. Christopher R. Robson, Doctor of Physical Therapy and Physical Therapist for Drayer Physical Therapy Institute in Hershey, delivered the 2011 Gerald R. Robinson Distinguished Lecture. Robson is a 2007 graduate of Lock Haven University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science. In his remarks, Robson congratulated the students and urged them to "do something great" with their lives. He advised them to do something they enjoy and will always be passionate about, to be proactive, and always to be mindful of where they want to end up. "Take what you've accomplished," he said, "and use it as a stepping stone to greater things." The following area students were recognized in the awards ceremony: Mariah Castrogiovanni of Montrose received the Catherine M. Frantz Memorial Scholarship, Updegraff Family Scholarship. She is the daughter of David and Jennie Castrogiovanni. Stephen Stahl of Montrose received the Catherine M. Frantz Memorial Scholarship, Ira McCloskey Scholarship. He is the son of John M. and Dianne T. Stahl. Named in honor of the former vice president for academic affairs and distinguished educator, the Gerald R. Robinson Distinguished Lecture brings outstanding scholars and business leaders to campus annually for the spring Academic Honors and Foundation Awards Convocation. Dr. Robinson, for whom Robinson Learning Center is named, was associated with Lock Haven University for 22 years.
Mountain View FBLA Succeeds In Hershey The Mountain View chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America sent 16 students to the State Leadership Conference in Hershey, Pennsylvania to compete in various events from April 3 to 6. Along with competing in their events, students attended many different workshops that taught them valuable life skills such as time management, leadership, and goal setting. The keynote speaker, Mr. Sam Glenn, taught the students about having a positive attitude about life. Olivia Zick placed sixth in Ms. Future Business Leader, Nathaniel Suchnick placed 11th in Network Concepts and Sabrina Fallon placed 1st in Middle Level Parliamentary Procedure in the state. All of the students worked hard in their events, learned a lot of valuable lessons and enjoyed meeting new people.
Sea Turtle Project At BR Elementary Fourth Grade students in Ms. Dibble's art class at Blue Ridge Elementary recently completed their second annual Sea Turtle Project. Students created sea turtles out of cardboard, balloons, plaster and paint. They also collected coins during the month of March and adopted a female loggerhead sea turtle, named Patty. Patty's travels can be tracked via satellite through the Sea Turtle Conservancy. Students can view Patty's location at http://www.conserveturtles.org/satelliteturtles.php. Students enjoyed learning about sea turtles, creating one of their own, and helping an endangered species. Students Compete At Engineering Olympics WILKES-BARRE, PA - Ten juniors from Forest City Regional High School (lead by teacher Jeffrey Earle) and ten juniors from Susquehanna Community High School (lead by physics teacher John Salinkas) competed at Wilkes University's 2011 Engineering Olympics. The Forest City team included Sonja Campbell, Rebel A. Akers, Amber Leary, Jennifer Natishak, Kristine Kuriger, Anthony Vadala and Elizabeth Heller; the Susquehanna Community team included Jeff Wayman, Tom Maby, Brandon Deakin, Sean Leonard, Kyle Napolitano, Nick Marco, Ryan Lee and Steven Skurski. The Wilkes Engineering Olympics were held on April 8. Ten high schools competed in five engineering events, including skyscraper building, electrical circuit, self-propelled vehicle, launcher design, and the MacGyver competition. Each team member on the first-place team won a $1,000/year scholarship to Wilkes University - a total of $4,000 each over four years. First place in the overall competition went to the team from Crestwood Area High School. E.L. Meyers High School placed second and the team from La Salle College High School placed third.
