Lakeside Players Production Upcoming

The Lakeside Players’ new comedy, “Double Occupancy,” proves you’re never too old for a little hanky panky. The madcap comedy about two sexy senior citizens will run on Saturday and Sunday, May 7 and 8, at Lakeville Community Hall, Route 590, Lakeville. The Saturday performance is at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee is at 3 p.m.

Written by Lakeside founders Tony Schwartz and Marylou Ambrose, the play premiered at Ehrhardt’s Waterfront on April 12, when it was performed for 18 senior bus groups over three days. The audiences had so much fun (and the cast did, too), the company is bringing the play to Lakeville, so the community can enjoy it as well.

Tony Schwartz and Marylou Ambrose star as Stanley Cohen and Helen Cooper.

“Double Occupancy” tells the story of Helen Cooper and Stanley Cohen - both in their 70s - who wake up in a motel room together after a night of passion. They discover the motor coach carrying the rest of their senior tour group has left without them! In a panic, the couple considers what to do next, but their plans are interrupted by a police loudspeaker announcing a bank robbery and warning people to stay in their homes because the thief is at large.

Helen and Stanley are trapped in their motel room, which suddenly gets crowded when a nosy maid pays a visit and a Catholic priest knocks at their door. Is the priest who he says he is? Why does that maid look so familiar? And who knew motor coach trips could be so exciting?

Besides Schwartz and Ambrose, the play features Greg Korin, Kelly Ann Walsh and Jerry Marino.

“Double Occupancy” is the first two-act play written by Schwartz and Ambrose, and a sequel is already being planned for 2012. The duo has also written a dozen audience-participation murder mysteries, which they perform locally. Their murder mysteries have been performed in 40 states in the U.S., as well as in England, Germany, Korea and Japan.

Founded in 1999, The Lakeside Players are recipients of numerous awards from the Northeastern Pennsylvania Theatrical Alliance (NEPTA) for acting and directing. In April, they received trophies for Best Comedy, Best Director of a Comedy, Best Actor in a Comedy, Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy and Best Supporting Actress in a Drama, for their 2010 hits “Fawlty Towers Revisited,” “Bermuda Avenue Triangle” and “The Book of Murder.”

Spring Bird Walks In Shelly Preserve
Submitted By Trebbe Johnson

Spring is finally arriving in northeastern Pennsylvania, even though juncos and cardinals are continue to visit the remaining bird feeders, and robins are hopping over soggy lawns. Nevertheless the spring bird migration has begun, and once again Florence Shelly Wetlands Preserve in Thompson, PA will host its two annual bird walks. Dedicated birders and curious amateurs alike will enjoy exploring the woods, fields, and wetlands of the 400-acre preserve as they identify birds by sight and song.

On Saturday, May 14 at 6:00 a.m., Ron Milliken will present his twenty-fourth annual bird walk in the preserve. Especially popular among avid birders, this walk focuses on migratory birds and identifying birds by their characteristic songs. The walk often lasts the entire morning and covers a wide area of the preserve, so participants can expect to locate between 60 and 65 species. (If you choose to stay for only part of the walk, that’s fine, too.)

The following Saturday, May 21 at 8:00 a.m. Evan Mann, a local birder and amateur naturalist, will conduct a leisurely walk around a smaller area of the preserve. Besides identifying birds that are nesting in the preserve’s diverse ecological niches, Mr. Mann will discuss the habits of the various species that the group spots.

Diversity is the key to the Shelly Preserve’s beauty and value and also the reason it hosts so many species. The brushy meadows are home to tree swallows, wrens and sparrows, while the deep boreal bog attracts eastern bluebirds nesting in dead snags, swamp sparrows, and belted kingfishers. Hawks can be spied hunting in open areas, while the preserve’s pristine brook and dense woodlands provide habitats for the northern waterthrush, Baltimore orioles, scarlet tanagers and least flycatchers. Plews Swamp is the preferred habitat for families of wood ducks, mallards and red-winged blackbirds. Participants can expect to see both familiar species and some surprises.

Both walks begin at the parking lot one mile north of Thompson on Route 171, where Stack Road intersects. The trails are likely to be wet, so wear warm, protective footwear. Don’t forget your binoculars, and come prepared to spend a morning - or mornings - exploring the fascinating world of birds. For further information, contact Dave Clemens, 570-879-4244.

WCHS To Hold Open House

A cordial invitation is extended to all with an interest in local history to attend the 20th annual open house of the Wyoming County Historical Society (WCHS) on May 15, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Admission is free and families are encouraged to bring their children. The society’s genealogical library and museum are located in the Old Harrison Street School Building on the corner of Harrison and Bridge Streets in Tunkhannock.

Since 1976, the Wyoming County Historical Society has worked diligently in the preservation of records, both vital and historical, pertaining to the heritage of individuals who have lived in and around Wyoming County. The library collection includes numerous books, area newspapers dating from December 1798 to present, and census records from 1790-1930 for all of Northeastern PA. Luzerne County vital records before 1842 include deeds, wills, orphan’s court and register’s dockets. The library has also expanded to include records of neighboring states that some of our earliest settlers came from. The museum contains displays of artifacts from the Civil War, World War I and World War II, a Victorian parlor, school room, shoemaker’s shop, barbershop, Native American artifacts, tannery display, tools, household utensils and much more.

The WCHS publishes as semi-annual newsletter, “Lest We Forget - Wyoming Co. Pioneers.” A table of contents for each issue is available at the society or may be found on-line at http://www.pawchs.org.

The genealogical library is open for research every Tuesday, Wednesday, and 1st and 3rd Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The museum is open by appointment from May 15 to October 15, during society hours. For further information call the society office at 570-836-5303.
