GEORGE F. SMITH George F. Smith, 68, of Susquehanna, PA, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 20, 2010, surrounded by family after a courageous seconds battle with cancer. George was born June 3, 1942 in Waverly, NY, to his late parents Floyd and Gertrude (Burgess) Smith. He was predeceased by his loving “2nd” parents, Harold (Stub) and Mildred Earl of Windsor, NY; and a very best friend, Elmer Spencer of Windsor, NY. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Floyd, Jr., James, Paul and Richard; and sister Janet. George was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Army, a retiree of Acme Markets, as well as a retiree of the New York Army National Guard, 204th Engineering Battalion. He is survived by his loving wife, Janet; sons, Gerald and Jason; his grandchildren, Matthew, Ethan, Anastasia and Austin. He is also survived by his brothers, Robert and Leroy; sister, Jessica; as well as several nieces and nephews. In his retirement, George loved to bake “cookies,” work with wood, and was an avid NASCAR fan, who always stuck by his beloved #24. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the United Methodist Church of Susquehanna, Fisher House Foundation, or the American Cancer Society. A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church, Main St., Susquehanna, PA, on July 31, 2010 at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor James Rouse officiating.
