Sarah-Jane Abate Named Commended Student

Sarah-Jane Abate Named Commended Student

Dr. Kenneth Cuomo, Elk Lake High School Principal, announced that Sarah-Jane Abate has been named a Commended Student in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship program. Dr. Cuomo is pictured above presenting a Letter of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, to this scholastically talented senior. “Sarah has been a tremendous asset to the school in a variety of ways,” Dr. Cuomo said. “Sarah is an incredibly talented student. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Drama Club, Yearbook Editor, and Starry Nights Art Honor Society. She is very deserving of this honor and Elk Lake is very proud of Sarah’s accomplishment.”

Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2010 competition for the National Merit Scholarship, Commended Students placed in the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“Recognition of high-achieving students is essential to advancing educational excellence in our nation,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “As demonstrated by their outstanding performance and our highly competitive program, the young men and women named Commended Students represent some of the most academically talented students in our country. We sincerely hope this recognition will enhance their educational opportunities and encourage them in their pursuit of academic and goals.”
