Ag Literacy Week At Lathrop Elementary
Submitted by Katelyn Farley, Susquehanna County Dairy Maid
Hi! My name is Katelyn Farley and I am a Dairy Maid for Susquehanna County. Recently I had the opportunity to educate kindergarten, first and second graders at Lathrop Street Elementary School about agriculture as part of Ag Literacy Week.

Katelyn enjoyed her visit as much as the students
I read the storybook "Tyler Makes Pancakes" and played agriculture bingo with the classes of Miss Zenger, Mrs. Pfamatter, and Mr. Wood. The students all seemed to have lots of fun, and hopefully they learned something about agriculture and where their dairy products come from. Don't forget to get your 3 servings of dairy each day from milk, cheese, and yogurt!

County Seeking Dairy Princess
Submitted By Evie Goff
Susquehanna County is seeking Dairy Princess candidates. Single young ladies, between the ages of 16-24 with interest in the dairy industry may want to consider devoting time to promote the dairy industry here in Susquehanna County. A County Princess serves for one year. Not old enough to be a Princess? The Dairy Maid and Dairy Ambassador program functions within the County to assist the Dairy Princess in carrying out her duties, and at times plan and carry out dairy promotions on their own.
The qualifications as a Dairy Princess candidate must include at least one of the following; a daughter, granddaughter, niece or sister of a dairy farmer; an employee of a dairy farm or dairy related business; be a 4-H member and own or lease one or more dairy animals as a 4-H project; or have served one year or more years as a Dairy Maid or Dairy Ambassador. A Princess candidate must be at least 16 years old by June 1st and not more than 24 years old as of June 1st of the current year.

Pictured (l-r) are members of the current Dairy Promotion Team: front row - Dairy Ambassador Kendra Brant, Dairy Maids Katelyn Farley, Courtney Marvin, Kaelynn Brant; back row - Dairy Ambassadors Elizabeth Chidester and Alivia Hughes, Dairy Princess Michayla Stahl, Alternate Dairy Princesses Vicki Clark and Dana Nunemacher, Dairy Ambassador Mary Chidester.
A Princess candidate, Dairy Maid or Dairy Ambassador must have a sincere desire to promote dairy products, be a milk drinker and include other dairy products in their personal diet. The Susquehanna County dairy court works hard spreading the message about the importance of consuming "three every day" of dairy; milk, cheese or yogurt.
Girls with interest in being a Dairy Princess candidate or taking part in the program as a Dairy Ambassador or Dairy Maid, or have questions about the program please contact Evie Goff (570-278-1212) or email gofffarm@epix.net by the April 23rd deadline.
Dairy Princess Michayla Stahl will be handing her reign to a new County Princess at the 2018 Dairy Princess Pageant being held on Friday, May 25th, 7:30 at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, Parish Hall on Church Street in Montrose. The public is invited to attend.

Libby
This beautiful brindle girl with the mesmerizing tiger eyes is Libby. A four year old, spayed, Boxer mix with an incredibly gentle disposition, Libby is very well mannered, quiet, housebroken, and walks wonderfully on a leash.
We are seeking a home without other pets and with someone who has a lot of time to devote to this sweetie since she is not a big fan of alone time. Spring has sprung and Libby would make a great outdoor companion as well as sharing the comforts of home. So if you are looking for a best friend who wants to be around you all the time please rescue our Libby. You may find she has rescued you as well.
Sadly Libby has been waiting ever so patiently at our shelter for over 1 year. In hopes of finally finding her the perfect home, we are waiving her adoption fee. Possibly you know someone who is home alone all the time and could really benefit from Libby's company???

Little Free Library Open In Clifford
Little Free Libraries are a growing global phenomenon. The small, front yard book exchanges number 36,000 around the world in 70 countries. Now, a new Little Free Library is available in Thompson, PA.
United Way of Susquehanna County along with its community partners, Susquehanna County Career and Technology Center, Clifford Township and Daydreamers Child Care has joined the movement to share books, bring people together and create communities of readers. A ribbon cutting ceremony for their fourth Little Free Library, which is located at the Clifford Recreational Center, (Cemetery Rd. Clifford, PA), was held on Monday, March 26, 2018th at 10AM. Special thanks to Chris Marcho, Clifford Township Supervisor, for allowing us to install the Little Free Library at their facility.

Pictured (l-r) are: Larry Wilson, Chris Marcho, Clifford Township; Katie Valentine, Daydreamers Child Care; Tom Marin, Cameron Wasko, Joe Wright, Bruce Castelli and Dr. Alice Davis, Susquehanna County Career and Technology Center; MaryAnn Warren, County Commissioner; Robin Cobb, United Way of Susquehanna County
"Our Little Free Library doesn't just belong to us, it belongs to the whole community," says Kim Merithew, Director of Corporate and Community Giving. This initiative aligns with our goal of Helping Children Do Well focusing on programs that support academic readiness, mentorship, family stability and childhood wellness. "It's our hope that this Little Free Library will bring a little more joy, a little more connection and a whole lot more books to our community", added Dr. Alice M. Davis-Executive Director, Susquehanna County Career and Technology Center. "This will be a wonderful addition to the Clifford Recreational Center and we are excited to be a part of this community initiative", shared Chris Marcho.
One of the most successful ways to improve the reading achievement of children is to increase their access to books, especially at home (McGill-Franzen & Allington, 2009). But according to the U.S. Department of Education, up to 61% of low-income families do not have any books for their kids at home.
Little Free Libraries play an essential role by providing 24/7 access to books and encouraging a love of reading in areas where books are scarce.
Anyone may contribute or take books. You can donate a book(s) by simply placing them in the Little Free Library book exchange near you. If you take a book (or two) from a Library, you do not need to return that exact book. However, in order to keep the Little Library full of good choices for the whole neighborhood, the next time you swing by the Library bring a few books to share. Little Free Library book exchanges function on the honor system; everyone contributes to ensure there are always quality books inside for both children and adults. This way, we all win!
In addition, informational pamphlets will be available to help connect the community to health and human service agencies serving Susquehanna County residents.
Susquehanna County residents are invited to visit any of the Little Free Libraries located in Thompson, Springville, Lawton and Clifford.
Special thanks are extended to the Susquehanna County Career and Technology Center Carpentry & Cabinetmaking Instructor, Bruce Castelli and his students for their expert design and craftsmanship. Under Mr. Castelli's leadership, the students are learning lifelong, valuable skills and have created a lasting community project for many, both young and old, to enjoy. Students from SCCTC Cabinet and Carpentry Making, Auto Body and Welding all contributed to building the unit.
