Wildlife Groups To Help Students

Three local wildlife conservation groups have made commitments to financially assist high school students who would want to attend the 2018 Pennsylvania Wildlife Leadership Academy (WLA). The wildlife conservation groups are the Susquehanna branch of the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA), The Wilson F. Moore Memorial chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and the Susquehanna County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs (SCFSC).

The WLA looks for highly motivated students between the ages of 14 and 17 to join one of their 5-day residential summer field schools. Students should have a demonstrated interest in the outdoors and in wildlife and/or fisheries conservation.. Each of the 5 summer field schools focuses on a single species: whitetail deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, brook trout and  bass. Students will gain extensive knowledge about Pennsylvania wildlife, habitat, natural resources, conservation leadership experience and communication skills. After graduating from the Academy’s summer field schools the students return to their communities to engage, educate and inspire others about conservation. Upon successful graduation from one of the camps the students may be designated as a Conservation Ambassador. Conservation Ambassadors will receive letters of recommendation for college and job applications, certification of community service work, certificates designating them as Conservation Ambassadors and the opportunity to obtain 3 transferable undergraduate level college credits through Cedar Crest College.

The 3 Susquehanna County wildlife organizations have supported students in the past years with the Susquehanna QDMA supporting eight students, The Wilson F. Moore NWTF chapter supporting one and the SCFSC in its first year of support for the WLA.

Each of these three organizations have committed $400 of the $500 field school fee.
