State Police Visit Mt. View Elementary

The Mountain View Elementary students in Grades 1 and 2 received a few special visitors. The first grade students were visited by Sgt. Michael Joyce, who spoke about the career of being a police officer. Sgt. Joyce also allowed the first grade students to check out the inside of the new police car and all of the new technology that our state police use to help keep citizens safe.  First grade teacher, Ashley Coviello said, “Students had the opportunity to interact with a police officer in a non-threatening/safe environment.  So many children are taught to fear the police..it was really nice to have the students be able to talk with Sgt. Joyce and ask him questions.  They learned that police officers work together to help the community and keep us safe.”

Mountain View’s second grade students were visited by a different type of police officer, the K-9 Unit! Second grade teachers had this to say about their experience, “The students had many positive interactions with Trooper Knott and his dog, Argo.  Trooper Knott and Argo had excellent rapport with the second grade students. They learned about the special training that Trooper Knott and Argo went through and continue to go through together.  Students learned how Argo was trained to search for narcotics, finding missing people, and locating money.  Trooper Knott brought in many items that he uses on a daily basis for Argo, including his police search vest, various leashes, muzzles, his favorite toy, a jar of shredded money, and items used to train Argo.  The students learned that being a narcotics dog is a busy, but rewarding job.”

Mountain View would like to thank the Pennsylvania State Police for sharing their knowledge and abilities with us!  We look forward to learning so much more from them!
