PASR Hosts Its Fall Meeting

The Susquehanna County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) held its fall General Membership meeting at Dryer Hall in Montrose on October 12th. Twenty-two members, representing the County's school districts, attended the meeting on a beautiful autumn day. Musical entertainment, prior to the meeting, was provided by Mae Belle Golis.

The 53rd State Convention of PASR, held in Lancaster, October 4-7, was attended by five of the Chapter's members. Those attending were Gary and Theresa Parker, Robert and Carol McNamara and John Manchester. Delegates at the Convention ratified the budget, approved resolutions and voted to approve four proposed By Law amendments. State officers elected for 2018 and 2019 were: President, Gary Parker, Susquehanna Chapter; President Elect, Judith Schaffer, Alle-Kiski Chapter; Vice President, William Neugebauer, Blair Chapter; Treasurer, Barbara Mitcho, Erie Chapter; and Assistant Treasurer Stephen Vak, Alle-Kiski Chapter.

The Education Support committee, chair by Ellen Holdredge, announced that a total of $1350 will be given to the six County school districts during the current school year.

The John J. Dillon Award was presented to Carol McNamara by President John Manchester. Carol is our Newsletter editor, and has done a marvelous job editing it. The John J. Dillon PASR Service Award has been developed in an effort to recognize individuals that give tremendous service to this association. This recognition award is for persons who contributed outstanding service to our association and its members.

Pictured are Connie and David Schulte, PASR Volunteer of the Year.

Janet Small, Community Service Chair, presented the 2017 Volunteer of the Year to David Schulte. Before retirement, Dave was a science teacher in the Mountain View School District. Since his retirement, he has been elected as the Clifford representative on the Mt. View School Board where he has served on various committees. He is a member of the Harford Congregational Church where he serves as president of the Church Council. When needed, he serves as a supply pastor for the Clifford Baptist Church and the Harford UCC Church. A large amount of his time is spent serving as the captain of the Clifford Ambulance which goes on between 250 and 300 ambulance calls a year. Dave goes on a large number of these, usually accompanied by his wife, Connie. PASR is grateful for all volunteers who give freely of their time. The community is a better place for volunteers like David Schulte.

A memorial service for 19 members and friends who passed away during the past fiscal year was conducted by Barbara Bush, chair of the Social Service memorial Honor Fund. A $95 donation was made to the State Memorial Fund in their memory.

Our local officers and committee chairs, for 2018-19 were installed by Barbara L. Kelly. They are President, John Manchester, Past President Robert McNamara, Secretary, Jane Jerauld, Treasurer, Norma Orner and Committee Chairs; Janet Small, Ellen Holdredge, Bob and Carol McNamara, Ruth Roman, Gary Parker, Karen Holbrook, Robert Orner and Barbara Bush.

A delicious buffet luncheon, prepared by the staff of the Montrose Bible Conference, was enjoyed by all following the meeting.

Real Men Read

“Skit skat scoodle doot. Flip flop flee. Everybody running up the coconut tree” could be heard through the halls of Elk Lake Elementary School as the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom was shared with Kindergarten students during the launch of United Way of Susquehanna County’s (UWSC) new signature program, Real Men Read. The program launched on October 10, 2017 and will take place four more times this school year.

Real Men Read connects volunteer male readers, MENtors from the community with Kindergarten classes in schools to encourage reading and learning in young children, and boost early grade reading success.  MENtors make a commitment to read to the class for an hour once a month, are trained to interact and lead the children in discovery, and must undergo a security clearance to work with the children. At the end of each reading visit each Kindergarten students receives a copy of the book read to add to their home library.

Doug Sivers reads Chicka Chicka Boom Boom to Kindergarten class

Why MENtors? With 81% of children under the age of 5 living in economically at-risk situations coupled with an increase in female led single parent households in Susquehanna County UWSC determined that this was a worthwhile program. Typically, teachers are female and so many children do not have a male mentor/positive influencer in their lives promoting the importance of literacy. Real Men Read helps these children to see men valuing education and reading.

This is a great opportunity for students to have a positive role model who values education and encourages the love of reading. From K-3rd grade students are learning to read, and from 3rd grade on students need to be able to read to learn. According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation students who don’t read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to leave high school without a diploma than proficient readers.

Real Men Read Volunteers (l-r): Jamie Orlandini (P&G), Doug Sivers (Montrose Methodist Church), Terri Allen (Johnson,Lauder & Savidge), Patrick O'Brien (Retired), Zach Morahan (Coughlin & Gerhart), Dave Palmer (Retired), Rich Mackey (Retired), Kim Smith (NBT Bank), Duane Naugle (Student), Bryce Powers (Rain for Rent), Brian Lione (Lione Heritage Consulting), and Brian Manzer (Rain for Rent). Missing: Tammy Bonnice (Williams) and Louis Duarte (Rain for Rent). Missing from photo, Louis Duarte (Rain for Rent), Christopher Stephens (P&G).

We can prepare our kids for a lifetime of success in reading and learning simply by sharing books, encouraging literacy skills and model the importance of reading.

UWSC will be introducing Real Men Read to the Blue Ridge School District in the fall of 2018. It is UWSC’s goal to bring this program to all Susquehanna County school districts depending on funding and volunteer support.

The program is made possible through community donations and funding from Southwestern Energy.

Successful Youth Pheasant Hunt At Salt Springs

On Saturday, October 7 the Wilson F. Moore Memorial (WFMM) chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) sponsored a mentored and guided Instructional Junior Pheasant Hunt at Salt Springs State Park. This year there were 8 youth hunters, 2 guides with 4 dogs (total), 8 parents/guardians and 6 members of the WFMM chapter of the NWTF that took part in the morning hunt. The 8 hunters harvested 11 pheasants. A good time was had by all on the warm and humid morning. Several times breaks were taken so the dogs could cool down.

Pictured (l-r) are: WFMM Chapter NWTF President and event hunting guide Jack Sorber, parent Jerry Sibley, Dylan Sibley, Jackson Leska, Melvie Leska, partially hidden J. D. Leska, almost totally hidden Joseph Leska, Gage Johnson, Dylan Geertgens, Brendan Kanna, Russ Cordner, Al Hickok WFMM NWTF Board member and Brian Birtch. (Photo courtesy of Bob Wagner)

The youth hunters received NWTF orange vests and hats. Breakfast items and lunch were also provided for the hunters and parents from the local chapter.

The WFMM did not do this hunt alone, the PGC supplied the pheasants and the Friends of Salt Springs (Park managers) supply the land and opportunity. Al Cuevas, Vice President of the WFMM NWTF chapter explained “… This hunt allowed young hunters the opportunity to gain hunting experience and help build a hunting support system for them as they pursue interests in hunting and the outdoors.”

Fall Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars

Hello! My name is Dana Nunemacher and I am the Alternate Dairy Princess of Susquehanna County. It is finally my favorite season; Fall! I love admiring the colors of the leaves and feeling the chill in the air.

Dana Nunemacher, Susquehanna County Alternate Dairy Princess

I also love getting to pull out my fall recipes for some fresh recipes. My favorite recipes are anything with pumpkin and dairy. Are you a fan of both of these delicious, and nutritious, items? Check out my recipe for Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars.

Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour;
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar;
  • 5 tablespoons cold butter;
  • 1 cup finely chopped pecans;
  • 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened;
  • 3/4 cup sugar;
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin;
  • 2 eggs;
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract;
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon;
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice;

In a large bowl, combine flour and brown sugar. Cut in butter until crumbly. Stir in pecans; set aside 3/4 cup for topping.

Press remaining crumb mixture into a greased 8-in. square baking pan. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack.

In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Beat in the pumpkin, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon and allspice. Pour over crust. Sprinkle with reserved crumb mixture.

Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack. Cut into bars. Store in the refrigerator. Yield: 16 bars.

I hope you enjoy these moo-tastic bars. The Susquehanna County Dairy Promotion teams wishes you a Fabulous Fall.

Red Cross Needs Blood Donors Before The Holiday Season

With the busy holiday season approaching, the American Red Cross encourages donors to give blood now to help ensure a sufficient supply for patients this winter.

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, many regular donors delay giving due to holiday activities and travel. This often decreases the amount of donated blood available for patients. More donations are needed in the weeks leading up to the holidays to help stock the shelves for patients like Emily Bratton. After the birth of her first child, she received several units of blood.

“I know that my life was saved because someone, somewhere, was willing to donate their blood,” said Bratton. “There aren’t words to describe how incredibly thankful I am that people are willing to donate blood to help a stranger.”

Give patients in need another reason to be thankful – make an appointment to give blood. Download the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit www.redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767).

An upcoming donation opportunity will take place in Susquehanna County at Hartford Lodge, Forest Street, Hop Bottom on Nov. 1, 2:00PM-6:00PM; Susquehanna Community High School, 3192 Turnpike Street, on Nov. 2, 9:00AM-2:00PM; and Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 15 East Church Street on Nov. 6, 12:30PM-5:30PM.

Real ID Will Ease Access

Governor Tom Wolf announced that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has granted Pennsylvania a REAL ID enforcement extension through October 10, 2018. This extension means that Pennsylvania residents will not face access issues when entering federal facilities or boarding commercial aircraft through that date.

“I am thankful that DHS has recognized Pennsylvania's efforts in becoming compliant with the REAL ID Act,” said Governor Tom Wolf. “REAL ID is a priority for PennDOT, and we look forward to being able to offer REAL ID-compliant products as an option for customers.”

PennDOT anticipates that REAL ID-compliant driver's licenses will be available at the customer's option in March 2019. Customers are encouraged to begin gathering the required documentation as soon as possible, giving them ample time to prepare. More information about what documents will be required is available on PennDOT's Driver and Vehicle Services website.

More information about REAL ID, including frequently asked questions, can be found at www.dmv.pa.gov.

Pet of the Week

Callie

In keeping with our commitment to saving lives and due to our deep love of the much misunderstood "pittie" breeds, True Friends is proud to welcome the adorable Callie to our shelter. Callie, a stunningly beautiful Cattle Dog/American Staffordshire Terrier mix, was recently rescued from an overcrowded shelter where she was "at risk" and faced an uncertain future. This calm, friendly girl is a snuggle bug who is extremely people focused and only 2 years old. Callie appears to be good with most other dogs, but as always we recommend a meet and greet.

Please join us and meet Callie and all her pittie friends on Sat. Oct 28th at our much anticipated “Pittie Party”, where the tradition of honoring these wonderful dogs is celebrated. There will be refreshments, a 50/50 raffle "Pennies for Pits”, raffle baskets, and most importantly our lovable “Pit Crew"  who will be dressed in their finest.  All adoption fees will be waived on any of these special pups through the month of October, but any donations will be greatly appreciated. Please consider giving Callie or any of our adoptable pits a home and join the many of us who are filled with the joy of "Pittie Pride”.
