Born on May 8, 1919, Mary was the daughter of Fred P. and Madeline Basso, who predeceased her; she was the last member of the Basso family of three.  Mary was a graduate of Laurel Hill Academy, Class of 1937, and a longtime communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in Susquehanna.  She was the widow of Edmond J. Ahearn, Jr., who passed away on April 6, 2007.

Mary was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend and is survived by her four children: Anne (Thomas) Dooley, Susquehanna, Patrick (Mary Beth) Ahearn, Susquehanna, Mary Ellen “Missy” (Michael) Wayne, Elmira, NY, Dorothy Schrader, Elmira, NY.  She is also survived by eight grandchildren and an ever expanding number of great-grandchildren.  Her family was very important to her and she loved her nieces and nephews equally, but was especially close to her nephew and neighbor, Gerald “Chet” Walker.

Mary was best known for her days working as a bookkeeper in the Parish Office of St. John’s and alongside her husband at the Ahearn Insurance Agency.  Mary enjoyed spending time with others, always enjoying a good conversation over a cup of tea.  She knew everything about anything regarding the history of Susquehanna.  The family is grateful for the many friends, neighbors and relatives, who made time to visit, call or send cards and share stories of their families and recollections of Susquehanna history.

Additionally, the family would like to thank Mary’s loyal caregivers who provided comfort, care and conversation – allowing Mary to remain in her home in the years since Edmond’s death.

A mass of Christian burial was offered on Tuesday, April 18, 11:00am at St. John’s Evangelist Church, Susquehanna, with Rev. David Cramer officiating.

Interment will be in the St. John’s Cemetery, Susquehanna, PA.
