MV Hosts Family Breakfast
Submitted by Robert Presley, Prinicpal
On Friday, December 2, 2016, students, administration, faculty, and staff of the Mountain View School District celebrated our tight-knit community through Family & Consumer Sciences Day—the national celebration that educates families about the importance of preparing healthy meals and “Dining In” together.
On that day, the Mountain View School District family shared breakfast together. The Mountain View School District provided home style breakfast to all students, administration, faculty, and staff in both the high school and the elementary school buildings.
In an effort to further cultivate a culture of connectedness and to encourage families to prepare and eat a healthy meal together at home, students in the Foods 101 and Baking classes along with Elaine M. Chichura, D.Ed., Family and Consumer Sciences teacher; Karen Voigt, Superintendent; Robert Presley, Christine Kelly, high school and elementary school principals respectively; Erin Oakley, Food Service Director; Diana Slick, Counselor for At-Risk Elementary Students; Pete Regeski, high school librarian planned this district wide breakfast. Students and adults shared a meal while having an opportunity to socialize outside of the traditional classroom setting.

The “Dining In” planning committee, pictured (l-r) include: Donna Porter, High School Counselor; Miles Rush, Senior; Bridgette Reed, Senior; Melody Haley, School Nurse; Karen Krizauskas, School Nurse; Elaine M. Chichura, D. Ed., Family and Consumer Sciences teacher; Karen Voigt, Superintendent; Daniel Frost, Health and Physical Education teacher.
In addition to sharing a meal in school, individuals are encouraged to join in a national campaign sponsored by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). Individuals can show their support for the “Dine In” campaign by committing to “Dine In” on the AAFCS web site. Their commitment to the project will appear on an interactive map on the web site. In 2014, more than 100,000 people worldwide committed to preparing and eating a healthy meal with their families. In 2015, one thousand forty three (1,043) people shared breakfast at the Mountain View School District. In addition to breakfast, a total of six hundred fifty six (656) individuals living within the Mountain View School District joined the more than one hundred twenty seven thousand two hundred seventy (127, 270) people worldwide in committing to preparing and eating a healthy meal with their families.
With the numerous benefits to families preparing and sharing meals together, “Dine In” in school or at home calls attention to something simple that families can do to be healthier. “We are proud to take part in this important initiative,” Chichura said.
December 3rd was chosen as Family & Consumer Sciences Day to honor AAFCS Founder Ellen Swallow Richards, first female graduate of MIT.

Susky Students Take SUNY Field Trip
Submitted By Tammy Heller
On November 16th, Susquehanna Community High School juniors and seniors who were interested in the medical field took a trip to SUNY Broome for the day. Admissions counselors spoke to the students about the application process, competitive programs in the health science fields, and scholarship opportunities available through Broome. Students then got a tour of the campus, including the dental hygiene labs. Lunch was provided on behalf of Broome admissions.

Pictured (l-r) are: front row- Morgan Rivenburg, Kendra Cole, Lacee Hodge, Haley Rhone, Briana Ferrante, Lyndsey Mroz, Evan Haley; back row- Alexandria Warring, Anjelica Birmingham, Dr. Warren DeWitt, Kassandra Hall, Gabrielle Glover, Kendra Colwell, Madisson Stanford, Kelsey Swartz, Emily Lawrenson, Bridget O’Neil.
This field trip was funded by the Claire Williams O’Neil Foundation (Roger and Joan O’Neil). It was organized through the help and support of Dr. Warren and Nancy DeWitt. The DeWitt family is working on a scholarship for any senior pursuing a degree in the health sciences field (nursing, clinical lab technicians, pre-med, dental hygiene, etc). This scholarship would go to one or two Susquehanna Community students attending either SUNY Broome or Binghamton University. This scholarship would be in the amount of $40,000-$80,000 over a 2 or 4 year period. A future trip will be planned for Binghamton University.
As always, we are very grateful for the continued help and support from the Claire Williams O’Neil Foundation, the DeWitt family, and the community of Susquehanna. Because of everyone, we are able to provide such valuable opportunities and unique educational experiences for our students.
