Halloween Fun

Sue Crawford (left), Susquehanna Borough councilwomen and Joni Miller (right), Susquehanna Community Development Association SCDA Co-Chair, found a way to add some ‘Halloween Fun’ to a little corner of Susquehanna.    With help from Ron Crawford and John Sholtiss, these ladies designed Pumpkin Friends that made a terrific addition to the festive fall decorating done by the SCDA Events committee.  The SCDA and borough council are working together towards establishing a new design committee that will focus on making downtown a more pleasant place to shop, work and play.

Harford Society Hosts Banquet

Dreyer Hall in Montrose was the setting for the annual Harford Agricultural Society’s banquet.  Over 100 members from the association and guests enjoyed the evening with a fall theme, which began with a delicious dinner.

Following the dinner, the group assembled in the Chapel Room where Dr. Michael Kowalewski, president of the Board of Directors, welcomed everyone. He acknowledged the fact that without all of the directors, the superintendents, the 200 employees, and all of the volunteers, there could not be a Harford Fair.  He reflected on the events of the 2016 fair which made it a success.  He talked about the development of the south end of the fair with new vendors, free entertainment, and the new cheese steak Harford Fair stand.  He encouraged anyone to offer his or her suggestions for future plans for the fair by sending an email to hfair@nep.net or by calling the fair office at 570-434-4300.

Dr. Mike then introduced the members of the Harford Fair Board of Directors and the Harford Fair Youth Board president, Jamie Supancik, who said a few words.  He introduced Ginny Beeman and Debbie Chidester and thanked them for the work they put into the special anniversary celebration of the queen competition.  He then introduced the alternate Harford Fair Queen, Kayla Grosvenor and the 25th Anniversary Harford Fair Queen Jolie Winemiller. Each addressed the group expressing how honored they were to represent the Harford Fair and how appreciative they were for the kindnesses extended to them by the fair people.  Jolie has already begun planning in order to represent the Harford Fair in Hershey at the State Fair Queen’s competition in January, 2017, which is a part of the Pennsylvania Association of County Fairs (PACF) Convention.

The Harford Agricultural Society recently presented fourteen $1000 scholarships at its annual fair banquet held at Dreyer Hall in Montrose. Because several of the recipients were away at college, parents or siblings accepted the scholarship award on their behalf. Pictured above (l-r) are: Sue Graham, mother of Austin Graham; Darren Pettyjohn, father of Ben Pettyjohn; Diane Supancik, mother of Emily Supancik; Shannon Cobb; Ruthie Ofalt, mother of Leah Ofalt; Mary Button, mother of Madison Button; Rebecca Longacre, sister of Sarah Longacre; Dempsey Hollenbeck; Rachel Johnson; Betty Eichelberger, mother of Cynthia Eichelberger; Lana and James Fluck, parents of Seth Fluck; and Lisa Schmidt, mother of Chad Schmidt.  Absent from the photo and scholarship recipients were Stephanie Ostir and Autumn Whitehead.

This is the seventh year that the scholarships have been awarded, with a total of $43,000.00 to forty-nine students.  The money for the scholarships is raised through the auction of the first and second place winners in each of the baked goods (pies, cakes, and breads) categories held each year at the fair on Monday afternoon.  The auction on Saturday of the wood carvings crafted throughout the week by the chainsaw carver adds to the fund, as well as individual donations..  Dr. Mike expressed appreciation to all who contributed to make the scholarships possible.  The applications were due August 31, 2016, and those received were reviewed by the scholarship committee, chaired by Board President Dr. Michael Kowalewski and comprised of directors Cindy Reynolds and Ron Stiles, along with association members Ginny Beeman, Stanley Kalafut, and Owen Bewley.  The committee members agreed that all applicants were strong and worthy of receiving a scholarship.  However, the twenty-two applications had to be narrowed to fourteen.  He solicited the help of the audience to seek out any students who qualify for the scholarships and encouraged them to apply next year.

Applications for next year’s scholarships will be available at the fair office during regular business hours or on the fair website www.harfordfair.com.  The application can be completed and submitted on line with the updated format.  Anyone interested in contributing to the scholarship funds for next year can do so by contacting LouAnn Kiefer, Harford Fair secretary at 570-434-4300.

Dr. Mike then presented each of the fourteen $1,000 scholarships to college students who have been involved with the fair for many years.  Winners included Shannon Cobb, Dempsey Hollenbeck and Rachel Johnson who were present.  Accepting for Madison Button her mother; Mary; for Cynthia Eichelberger her mother, Betty; for Seth Fluck his parents, Lana and James; for Austin Graham was his mother, Susan; for Sarah Longacre her sister, Rebecca; for Leah Ofalt her mother, Ruthie; for Ben Pettyjohn his father, Darren; for Chad Schmidt his mother, Lisa; for Emily Supancik her mother, Diane; and for Autumn Whitehead her parents, Julie and Mark.   Also receiving a scholarship was Stephanie Ostir.

Director Cindy Reynolds, second vice-president, chairman of advertising and media contacts, was then introduced.  She thanked everyone for his/her help in making the 159th Harford Fair another successful year.  She announced that the fair had hired two professional videographers this year, Chris Balton and Mary Frances Giordano with chrisbalton.com to video tape and document the fair.

They produced approximately 80 hours of video taping and editing, which were posted daily during the fair on Facebook with a link on the website. She then introduced the video 159th Harford Fair Celebration which had been created for the banquet utilizing the hours of videotaping.  Anyone interested in viewing any of the videos can do so by going to Harford Fair 2016 videos. Cindy then encouraged anyone with ideas for advertising to contact her at any time and noted that the committee would appreciate the suggestions.

The group enjoyed the video, especially because most of those in attendance don’t get to see many of the events during the fair because they are working within their own areas.  A good time was had by all.

Pet of the Week

Throughout the month of November we are celebrating our love for all our fantastic felines by waiving our adoption fees on all our cats at the shelter.  We have so many beautiful, special cats that would love nothing more than a comfortable home.  Please consider given one(or more) their greatest wish!  A donation of your choosing is still greatly needed and appreciated to offset the costs of their care.

We are also gearing up for the momentous upcoming election by throwing our own candidate into the mix.  Still undecided or looking for someone worthy of your vote?  Give a pit a chance and vote for our main man, Valentino.  He believes in peace, love, drool, and food in every pet bowl!!!  Each vote is $1 and you can cast your vote by visiting our site, truefriendsawc.com or stopping by the shelter.

Fun Fact:  Only 3 animals (cats, camels, and giraffes) walk by moving the 2 legs on one side of their bodies together first before shifting sides and moving the other 2 legs together. This technique minimizes energy use and ensures speed. Test this fun fact out for yourself by adopting a kitty and having them walk right into your heart!
