The Lakeside Players To Present Comedy

The atmosphere at the Sunnyvale Senior Center is far from sunny. The décor is depressing, the lunches are lousy, the activities are asinine, and the social director is nauseatingly perky. Attendance is down to four seniors, and they’re crabby as hell. Then a mysterious man on prison work release arrives to do community service, and suddenly, everything changes.

The two-act comedy by Lakeside founders Marylou Ambrose and Tony Schwartz will be presented for two days only, on Saturday, Sept. 24, and Sunday, Sept. 25, at Lakeville Community Hall, Route 590, Lakeville (between the United Methodist Church and the fire house). The Saturday show is at 7:30 p.m., and the Sunday matinee is at 3 p.m. There is no Friday performance.

“Raising Cane” (L-R) are: Kerry Brazen, Tony Schwartz, Marylou Ambrose, Frank DeSando, Randy Hennig, Veronika Deisler.

The show premiered in 2014 at Ehrhardt’s Waterfront Banquet Center (now called The Waterfront at Silver Birches) and will enjoy a third run there on Sept. 21 and 22. It was such a hitwith daytime bus groups, Lakeside decided to open it to the general public at Lakeville Community Hall.

“Raising Cane” tells the story of a senior center on the brink of closing and the four clients who desperately want to keep it open. They’ve lost hope, when along comes a man called “Cane,” assigned to the center to do custodial duties as part of a prison work release program. At first, the seniors are afraid of Cane, and the activities director resents him. But as Cane goes about his duties, he imparts a bit of wisdom, a few words of encouragement, a joke or two -- and hope for the future.  Energized, the seniors stage a revolt, with hilarious results! Who is Cane? Why is he in prison? And why does everyone -- seniors and staff --suddenly feel like anything is possible?

To make reservations for “Raising Cane,” call 570-470-8713 before Sept. 17 and 570-226-6207afterwards -- or buy tickets at the door.
