Trail Students Honor Veterans

Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center recently honored local Veterans with an escort of uniformed Brownies and Scouts to a musical selection played by a group of talented elementary musicians.  This was followed with a Freedom Poem recited by kindergarten students.  The Veterans were treated to selections by the 5th and 6th grade chorus along with a song by Brownie Troop 50047.  The guest speaker was Veteran Arthur Haus who shared with the audience bits of history on the importance of Veterans Day.  A power point presentation which included photos of the attending Veterans, photos of staff family members who have served or are serving in the military and an album of Freedoms experienced by staff and their families was shared.

Pictured (l-r) are a large number of local veterans who recently attended a program in their honor at the Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center: front row - Elizabeth Reynolds, Donald Antoine, Sr. Stephen O’Neill, Art Haus, John Kman, Henry W. Fassett, Frank Brown, Joseph Marconi, George M. Brown, William T. Reynolds; back row - Darius Reynolds, Jessica Carter, Benjamin Carter, Edward Joyce, William Laird, Jerome Kelly, Ken Aten, James Gray, Gerard McNamara.  In attendance at the program, but missing from photo were William Grambo, Sal Bellanca, Robert O’Boyle and Joseph Strauch.

The highlight of the program for all was the student reaction to the song “I am Proud to be an American.”  During this song all students who have a veteran in their family waved a photo of that family member to the music along with patriotic hearts that they designed to give to the attending veterans.  The look on the faces of the veterans, students and staff was priceless.  It was in that moment that the true sense of Veterans Day and love of our country was felt.  The message from the program was to express a thank you to the Veterans for all they do and have done for all of us. This was a way of showing that they are not forgotten.

SCCTC & Walmart Partner To Help

The Susquehanna County Career & Technology Center has the Christmas spirit! Eighteen local families will have had a brighter holiday because of the efforts of the faculty, staff and students of the SCCTC. Wish lists and size information were handed out in early December to the different program areas. Toys and clothing were then donated and purchased to fulfill the needs and wishes of these families. Students helped to wrap presents and organize this undertaking.

Pictured (l-r) are: front row - Lane Southworth, Caitlyn Lutkowski, Ashley Meck, Kayla Wayman, Addison Boom, Josh Thurman; back row - Liam Ruppert, Brian Webb, Ashley Hallisey, Robert Gregory, Hailey Hollister, David Lamoreaux,  Dr. Alice M. Davis.

Each family received a $100 gift card from Walmart. Dr. Alice M. Davis, Executive Director of the SCCTC noted, “We are so grateful to Walmart of Tunkhannock for helping us with this effort. They generously gave us a 10% discount on the gifts cards.”

Forty-nine children and 26 adults will receive gifts this year, in part because of the students’ willingness to help. Dr. Davis emphasized, “I am so proud of our students’ kindness and generosity. They consistently go above and beyond in school and in the community.”
