Local Youth Get Work Experience

Local youth across the Northern Tier were able to earn a paycheck this summer while gaining valuable work experience.  Sixty-two young people, ages 14-21, participated in the Summer Employment program in the five county region.  Throughout the program, the participants learned valuable skills that will shape their future working careers.

Starting in June, program participants were placed to their jobs with employers in private and public sectors, for-profit employers and non-profit organizations.  The youth were paid $7.25 an hour.  The six week program included a week of employer and college tours as well as a variety of workshops such as interviewing and resume writing, career exploration, finance and budgeting, PHEAA, healthy habits, team building and more.

Pictured (l-r) are Brock Blodgett, Chelsea Bush and Austin Devries who participated in a team building exercise as part of the Susquehanna County Summer Employment Program.

Participants were also given the opportunity to earn the National Retail Federation’s certification in customer service, a nationally recognized credential that will help them obtain retail employment.

The 28 participating worksites included area school districts, Project Grow, Sullivan County Library, Susquehanna Borough, Wheeland Lumber Company, Tioga County YMCA, Goodwill, Canyon County Cabs, Wellsboro Pet Complex, Wellsboro Borough, Mansfield Borough, TREHAB Inc., Wyoming County Senior Center, Interfaith Friends, Endless Mts. Visitor’s Bureau, Wyoming County Recycling and Star Hill Rest Home.

Administered by Bradford County Action in Bradford county and TREHAB in Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga and Wyoming counties, the program is funded with Workforce Investment Act and DPW funding.

The RYLA conference is an annual program for high school students completing their sophomore year who have shown leadership potential in their home, school, and community. A dinner in their honor, attended by the students, their families, sponsors and Rotarians was held at the Green Gables on September 11.  Each student explained his or her role in the program and how the experience had benefited them.

Pet Of The Week

Veda is a big beautiful girl.  She loves to go on walks but needs a strong person and some obedience training.  She will sometimes (according to the last owner) lunge at strangers or other dogs she may meet.  She has never been a problem here at the shelter and would do best in an adult home with medium activity levels.  Some of our visitors have questioned our application process.  We are doing our best to insure that our animals go to responsible homes.

Veda

Following Pennsylvania laws on licensing and rabies vaccines, spaying or neutering your past and current companions and getting regular vaccines at your veterinary shows us that your pet has a respected priority in your household.  It is meant to help us do our part in focusing on a lifetime of love and care for our animals and is not meant to be a personal judgment.  We are happy to see determined potential guardians rescue, adopt or save an animal from anywhere.  We hope that you will continue your search for the one that needs you.
