PA Championship Stock Dog Trials

The 33rd annual Pennsylvania State Championship Stock Dog Trial (PSCSDT) moves from it’s traditional venue on Father’s Day weekend at Sheepy Hollow Farm to a much larger trial field at the Harford Fair grounds this year. The four-day event, sponsored by Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation, includes the PSCSDT state championship and the regional Northeast Border Collie Association’s Fall Foliage Championship, from Oct. 2nd through Oct. 5th, 2014.  Hours are 8 a.m.– 6 p.m.

The change in venue provides opportunities for more dogs and handlers to participate, gives better access for participants and spectators and offers increased camper and spectator parking.   It’s an exciting outdoor event that provides another opportunity for families to enjoy the fall foliage typical of the season and area. The event is open to the public with free admission and a small parking fee. This year, 93 dogs will compete in two open trials, each extending over a day and a half. The last day will consist of the NEBCA Double Lift with the 15 highest qualifying dogs from the state championship open trials competing. The PSCSDT dogs and handlers come from more than 14 states and the provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

Breakfast, lunches, snacks, and beverages may be purchased at the trial field from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tents and bleachers are provided for spectator and handlers comfort.  A running, voiced, commentary explains the activity on the field and a written program helps to keep the spectators informed.   Spectators are encouraged to bring their own camp chairs and may take photos during the event.   If bringing pets, they must be on a leash, under voice control; and clean-up after your animals is a must.

Highlights of the trip are a 2 hour tour at Wagner Lumber Hardwoods in Cayuta New York, walking/hiking and waterfalls viewing with a return trip that enjoys the fall foliage of the Southern Tier of NY & Northern Tier of Pa. A 5:30PM return to Montrose is planned.

Stops and sights on the tour include: Susquehanna County fall foliage in Montrose, Silver Lake, Little Meadows; New York fall foliage from Apolacon, NY to Cayuta, NY; Wagner Hardwoods Company (one of 4 Wagner Lumber Co. facilities) Tour 2+ hours – sawmill operation, drying kilns, lumber yard and material recycling; lunch on your own with a choice of 6 different Ithaca restaurants; afternoon tour walk/hike at Taughannock Falls State park waterfalls; return trip to Pa. foliage viewing via NY countryside roads.

Retired Bureau of Forestry Service Forester Jim Kessler and SCFLOA President Jim James will provide information and interesting dialogue explaining the topography, soils and conditions that contribute to the varying leaf colorations and noteworthy historical observations. SCFLOA President Jim James states "...Jim Kessler will weave a message about the trees the color they are that is as informative as the foliage is colorful." Jim Kessler stated "... Our group has been thinking about coming to hike some of the New York State park waterfalls and trails for over 20 years and now we are finally headed there."

The tour will leave the parking lot behind the County Office Building in Montrose. The bus will be loading at 7:45AM for a prompt 8 a.m. departure on Monday, October 13.

Reservations for this enjoyable trip must be made by Oct 8, 2014. Clip and return by October 8 (non members of SCFLOA are welcome to sign up for the bus trip).
