Canning, Freezing Classes Offered

Penn State Extension offers classes for consumers on preserving food at home. Come and learn how to can or freeze fruits and vegetables. You will find useful information, whether you are new to preserving or want to learn the latest methods. All classes will provide current, science based guidelines for preserving food at home from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.

During the Home Canning Basics class learn how to prepare food and equipment for canning. Steps for using the boiling water canner and pressure canner will be shown. The class will take place on Monday, August 4 from 6:30-8:30 pm and again on Tuesday, August 5 from 10 am to noon.

Learn how to freeze fruits and vegetables to maintain high quality for long term storage during Good Eating from the Freezer. Blanching and packaging vegetables for the freezer will be shown. Two classes will be held on Wednesday, August 6 from 10-11:30 am and 6:30-8:00 pm.

Equipment and supplies will be on display during classes. Directions and recipes will be available to take home. Resources for home food preservation will be shared.

These classes will take place in the meeting room at the Penn State Extension Office, 200 Main Street in Towanda. Use the rear entrance to the building.

There is a minor fee for each class. One set of class materials will be given per household. The fee may be waived based on need. Register to attend by August 1. Call 1-855-394-7534 to register.

If your pressure canner has a dial gauge, bring it to be checked after the class. Dial gauges should be tested for accuracy each year. It is not necessary to bring the whole canner, only the gauge is needed for testing.

The USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning and the University of Georgia’s So Easy to Preserve book on canning, freezing, and drying will be available to buy at the classes.

Additional classes can be scheduled for a group in your area. Contact Cathy Guffey, extension educator, at 570-265-2896 or cbg1@psu.edu for more information.

The Penn State Home Food Preservation website gives recipes for safe canning, freezing and drying, and equipment and ingredient sources. Go to http://extension.psu.edu/food/preservation.

Talents Wanted For Harford Fair Cover

Put your creative talents in motion and enter the Design the Cover Contest for the Harford Fair Premium Book for 2015. For many years the Harford Agricultural Society sponsored a contest for students to design the cover for its annual premium book. How exciting for the winner when his artwork appeared on the cover of the 3,000 copies of the book.

This year the board of directors has decided to open the contest to not only students but also adults as well. So if you love the Harford Fair and would like to design a cover for next year’s premium book, get out your artist’s tools and get busy. August 1, 2014 is the deadline to submit your entry blank to have your cover judged.

The rules and guidelines are as follows:

GENERAL THEME: The design for the cover should represent a variety of activities that are available to do when spending a day at the fair. Some things to consider would be the animals, crafts, foods, rides, arena shows, rodeo, parade, and schoolhouse.

Included in the cover design must be: 158th Harford Fair, August 17-22, 2015.

SIZE/MEDIUM: The design must be original, 8.5 X 11 in size, and done in any medium.

ENTER online by clicking Online Entries on the website www.harfordfair.com). Or you can use the General Entry Blank (available online) and mail it to the Harford Agricultural Society, PO Box 288, Harford, PA 18823 no later than August 1, 2014. If the entry is a child’s entry, list grade for the 2013-2014 school year.

JUDGING: The designs will be judged by the Harford Agricultural Society Board of Directors. Judging will be based on originality, design, neatness and printability in the cover format.

PRIZES: There will be one prize per class. One overall winner will be chosen from the winners of each of the classes. That entry will be judged for possible use as the cover for the 2015 fair book.*

CLASSES (this should be listed on the entry blank): Class 1 – preschool to grade 4; Class 2 – 5th grade to 8th grade; Class 3 – 9th grade to 12th grade; Class 4 – Adult.

WINNER OF EACH CLASS: $10.00. OVERALL WINNER: $50.00.

*Entries become the property of the Harford Agricultural Society and the Board of Directors reserves the right to reject the overall winner for print. Creative Talents Wanted For Harford Fair Cover
