Harvesting Our Water

According to all reports and some speculation we are going to loose our coastlines within the next hundred years.

As a farmer living in the northeast I feel safe that where I live won't get flooded to where we will have to relocate. The people on the coast, however better believe. They better believe the scientists and even if it does not happen they better at least go through the motions.

The motions I’m talking about are installing large high volume electric pumps and pipelines inland. By inland I mean the Grand Canyon and low lying swamp land and high ones too that will allow the brackish water to filter back down or just evaporate. The pumps could be set up along the pipelines and can be powered by wind turbines to keep water moving round the clock forever, like the windmills in Holland.

This needs to be done, but for who and by whom? I feel every homeowner that is vulnerable to flooding should take on this project as a future investment to protect their investment. Also, start a group in the east and south and west and hire folks to draw up the plans and make it happen.

The Great Salt Lake needs to be filled once again with salt water from the west; the Grand Canyon from the northwest and fill it up. Make large dams in the canyon to hold back millions of gallons of water and continue to pump them fill and release, full and release.

The clock is ticking and this sounds like a fable or a storybook. This my friends needs to be done. It will take money, but to save your shore homes and island houses along the coasts you better start now. If you have an investment of a nice cottage or multi-million dollar home along the coast,(anywhere) now is the time to protect it.

I live in Ararat, on the mountain so I will help also. We as humans need to understand and to work together because it is going to happen and this is my idea as a way to save water and to direct water to where it is needed and to where it can seep back under ground or be evaporated over land and condense back to pure water.

Pipelines can run on top of the ground and along side major highways and as long as the water keeps flowing it won't freeze so it can be done. Move water from area to area, allow it to be dumped anywhere that it will be stored until it evaporates or is absorbed back into earth. Let’s move on this today. Let’s do it for the betterment of man kind.

Maybe we can name the project...Harvest days of Salvation. The drought is effecting all of us, with high costs of food, fuel, etc. and we all pay for that. We can eliminate the droughts everywhere simply by moving water. Heaven knows, we move fuel and oil so let’s make this happen. Let’s do this for our next generation.

Sincerely,

Rumored To Have Disappeared

A rumor has surfaced that the Traditional Massed Band Concert, usually held on the last day of the Susquehanna County Library’s/Historical Society’s Blueberry Festival, has been cancelled for this year. It is alleged that an agreement between the Montrose Area School District and the custodians prevent the custodians from working beyond 6:00pm. Rehearsals are usually held the week before the concert from 6:00 to 8:00pm. It is a shame that a compromise could not have been made for the custodians to start two and a half hours later and stay until 8:30 during the evenings before the concert.

The modern massed band concerts were started to bring back memories of the massed bands which were held in Montrose during the 30’s and 40’s. Montrose’s own “Music Man”, Mr. Maurice Taylor was the founder of these band which drew thousands of spectators to witness these memorable concerts.

Many of the musicians in our modern massed bands and many audience members were trained by Mr. Taylor. The majority of the current band members are now children, grandchildren, great-grand children of the original massed band members. They were well trained and have many great memories of concerts in which they participated.

Mr. Maurice Taylor, Dean Houck, Bob Orner, Suzanne Bennici, and Johanna Reed (hosts of the massed band concerts) with the help of Betty Smith believed in the idea of showcasing the musical talent we have in Susquehanna County, and in this writer’s opinion, it is a shame that another tradition is rumored to disappear.

Sincerely,

C. Robert Orner
