The students and faculty at the Susquehanna Community Elementary School kicked off their Summer Reading Challenge with an hour of reading during the last week of school. “Read at the Beach” has become an annual event where students and teachers can be found all over the building and grounds reading books of their choosing. The children bring beach towels and wear sunglasses as they read while pretending to be at the beach.
The Penguin-Putnam warehouse in Kirkwood, NY donates about a dozen boxes of new books each year to support our program. This year The Portal Institute on Melrose Road in Susquehanna also donated over a dozen boxes of gently used books for the Summer Reading Challenge.
Each student in the elementary selects three books at their level to read and report on over the summer months. In the fall students bring back their completed report packets for prizes and awards. Sabers Read – Sabers Succeed!
