Kay Dodge Graves

Kay Dodge Graves, age 79, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2013 at the Hope Hospice facility of Shell Point Retirement Village in Lee County, Florida.  She was born in New Milford, PA on March 24, 1934 to Frederick and Marion Gillespie Dodge.  She attended school there, and graduated from high school in 1952.

In 1954 she moved to Marilla, NY, a suburb of Buffalo, where she met and married Kenneth W. Graves, her husband of 58 years.  Kay worked at Cornell Aeronautical Lab as an Executive Secretary until 1979 when she left the area with her husband to work at the Ingersoll-Rand Co. in New Jersey and later at International Flavors & Fragrances as an administrative assistant for their Vice President.  In 1987, they purchased a retirement home on Sanibel Island, which had been a favorite vacationing spot since 1964.  Both retired in 1989 and began the “snowbird” life, spending about seven months every year in Florida, except when they travelled abroad.    Also, returning to New Milford in 1994, the couple built a summer home on Kay’s beloved Upper Lake property that she had inherited from her grandfather, Frank N. Gillespie.

Kay was a wonderful wife and mother.  She loved to cook and bake and was known for her delicious recipes.  In her spare time she enjoyed creating things, such as award-winning counted cross-stitch, crocheting, stained glass work, and basket weaving.  She took special pride in her craftsmanship.  For many years she and Ken belonged to local square dance clubs, and she played mahjongg with a Florida group.  In addition, she compiled considerable data on the genealogy of both families during the last thirty years of her life.  As a part of this effort she showed that the lineage of both included Mayflower passengers.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth W. Graves, a sister, Grace Compton, her three children, Mark Nelson Graves of Fabius, NY, Gail Artin of Ormond Beach, FL, Deborah Kromer of Nazareth, PA and three grandchildren, Kelly Kromer, Lauren Kromer, and Mitchell Artin.

Kay was a member of the New Milford Methodist Church, and a memorial service celebrating her life will be held there on Saturday, June 21 at 2:00 PM.  The church is located at 69 Pratt St.  Her ashes will be interred at the family plot in the New Milford cemetery after the service.

Kay was a graduate of Keystone College.  She was employed by Barnes Kasson Hospital, Susquehanna, for 43 years.  She was a longtime Susquehanna Borough council member and President of BPW.  She loved the outdoors and wildlife.  Kay cherished her Siberian Husky, Kodi and cat, Gimley.  She was an amazing woman and will be loved and missed dearly by the many friends she has acquired throughout the years.  Arrangements are being handled by Hennessey’s Funeral Home, Susquehanna, PA.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date at the convenience of the family.
