Allyssa Hewitt received the scholarship awarded by the Susquehanna Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR). The award was presented at the Senior Awards assembly at Elk Lake High School. Bob Orner, former Elk Lake music teacher and past president of the Chapter, made the presentation. He was accompanied by Bob McNamara, president of the Chapter, and Ellen Holdredge, Educational Support Chairman.

During her years in high school, Allyssa was highly involved in the school’s drama club, chorus, and the band, in which she played clarinet. She was a member of the National Honor Society as well as the French National Honor Society.
Allyssa has been involved with Whipple Performing Arts Studio in Tunkhannock. She also enjoys playing the guitar.
In the fall, she will attend Bloomsburg University to major in music education.
The resident of the month of May at the Forest City Nursing and Rehab Center is Fred Piatt. Fred was born January 27th to Anna and Fred Piatt, Sr. of Jermyn, Pa. Fred is one of 10 children; four sisters and five brothers. His father, Fred Sr. worked as a coalminer for the Hudson Coal Company while his mother stayed at home and cared for her large family. When Fred was in the ninth grade, his father passed away, so Fred quit school and went to work on a dairy farm to help support the family. Later he joined the army and served his country for two and a half years in Italy. After the service, Fred returned to Pa. and went to shoemaker school.

During that time he met his lovely wife to- be Jeanette. Fred and Jeanette married on June 1, 1950 and bought a cozy little bungalow on Wyoming St., in Carbondale. They then became faithful members of the Presbyterian Church where they attended for many years.
Fred is a member of the VFW of Jermyn. He and Jeanette were avid polka dancers and attended dances in Herrick Center and Pleasant Mount. Fred is an accomplished wood worker and had a shop in his home where he created many beautiful yard ornaments.
At the nursing center, Fred enjoys Bingo, Casino, Musical Events, Religious Services and socializing with all of his friends at the facility. A party was held in his honor on May 12th with music provided by Jay Best.
