Blueberry Festival Seeking Donations

It’s finally time for Spring Cleaning! You’ve most likely begun sorting through your house and garage to get ready for the summer. As you’re preparing to donate items you no longer need, will you keep the Blueberry Festival in mind?

The 35th Annual Montrose Blueberry Festival is rapidly approaching! This year’s festival will be held on Friday & Saturday, August 1st and 2nd from 9am – 4pm with the pancake breakfast starting at 8am both days. Once again, the Library & Historical Society would like to ask for your help in donating items for the festival.

One of the main attractions of the Blueberry Festival is the giant book sale. We appreciate your gently used book donations. Please remember we cannot accept text books, Reader’s Digest condensed books, encyclopedias, or VHS tapes. This year we will be accepting book donations until the end of the business day on Tuesday, July 1st. After this point, we will be unable to accept further donations. We appreciate your help with this.

The White Elephant sale is also seeking gently used items; all items for donation should be in clean, sell-able condition. We are not able to accept large appliances, large furniture, or exercise equipment. We also cannot accept clothing items – please consider Interfaith in Montrose or other charitable organizations for your clothing donations. Please do not bring book donations to the White Elephant drop-off location; bring appropriate book donations directly to the library.

There is a new drop-off location for White Elephant donations this year! We will be collecting items at the white pharmacy building next to the old hospital building, located on the corner of Maple and Grow Avenue in Montrose. Please do not bring donations to the library but only to the old pharmacy building. Donations will be accepted starting Monday, June 2nd, and Thursday, June 5th from 9am – 1pm. Donations will then be accepted every Monday and Thursday in June from 9am – 1pm. In July, we will start accepting donations on Monday, the 7th and every Monday and Thursday following until the 17th from 9am – 1pm. July 17th is the final day for White Elephant donations.

The Library is also seeking handcrafted items for its Handcraft & Harvest table. We appreciate donations of jams and jellies and fresh produce when the festival approaches. Unique items are needed for the Silent Auction. Thanks for all of your donations and help to ensure the festival is enjoyable for all and beneficial to the library and community.

If you have any questions about donations, please contact the library at 570-278-1881.

Wildflower Walk At Florence Shelly Wetlands Preserve

No matter how old we get, there is always a part of us that loves a good treasure hunt — and that is exactly you can expect on the wildflower nature walk hosted by the Florence Shelly Preserve Stewardship Committee on Sunday, June 8 and led by naturalist and environmental educator Nancy Wottrich.

Whether you’re an experienced botanist or a novice, you will find that this walk offers you a new understanding and appreciation of local plants, their habits, challenges, and proclivities. Nancy’s walks are different from those that focus simply on naming as many species as possible; she invites participants to dive into the world of plants and see what’s there.

She’ll have wildflower field guides on hand and will teach shortcuts to identifying flowers by leaves, stalks, etc., so the next time you come upon a wildflower whose name you’d like to know, you don’t have to flip through an entire guidebook to find it. You are also welcome to bring your own field guide.

We’ll follow the trail through woods and wetlands, stopping along the way to examine the wildflowers we find. At the deep, cold, glacial Weirs Pond, the carnivorous pitcher plants should be in full bloom, and you may have the chance to see one “consuming” an insect. Also at the pond, tucked among the ancient rocks, are two rare species of wildflower, yellow clintonia and twisted rosy stalk. You may also spot the extravagantly beautiful Lady’s Slippers hidden in the woods. These are just a few of the many wildflowers waiting to be discovered on this treasure hunt in nature.

Nancy Wottrich has been in the field of environmental education and interpretive natural history since 1980. She has a Masters degree in Environmental Studies and has worked with all age groups, teaching about natural history by using the whole ecology approach that studies species in the context of their surroundings. She has been actively involved with Salt Springs State Park and conducts biological surveys in the fields of land protection and land trust. Since 2001 she has worked as environmental consultant in Susquehanna County.

The walk will begin Sunday, June 8 at 2:00 PM at the Stalk Road parking lot, one mile north of Thompson, PA on Route 171, where Stack Road intersects. The walk is scheduled to last two hours, with an optional extra hour of wildflower viewing possible for those who are interested. It’s a good idea to wear waterproof shoes, since we’ll be walking in a wetland. Note that the trail is uneven, with spots that are rocky and wet. No reservations are required and the walk is free of charge. For more information call Trebbe Johnson at 570-396-0293.
