Blue Lemonade Comedy Coming To Starrucca
Submitted by Dr. Christopher Lake
St. Martin’s Players will present the original comedy Blue Lemonade on Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3 at 7 PM and on Sunday, May 4 at 2 PM at the St. Paul’s Parish Hall, Starrucca, PA. For directions or information, please call 570-442-1084.
This Southern play, written and directed by local Chris Lake, depicts the DeBlu sisters (Mary Beth Zincone, Sue Lee, and Beatrice Place) and their conquest of landing three suitors (Eddie Reddon, Fred Jackson, and Chris Lake) for the Spring promenade. All of their mother’s (Martina Lingobardo) plans are going well, until their Yankee cousin from Boston (Sharon Panasevich) shows up. This makes a problem of “proportion.” There are four young ladies and only three young men!
To help solve the problem, the family maid (Deb McNamee), the gardener (Jimmy Stewart), and Big Daddy (John Freitag) work out every solution they can imagine. Of course, their neighbors (Frank Hadnady, Carol Jackson, and Terry Hill) do help in the situation. The real question is how far does Southern hospitality really go with strangers, friends, and family, when faced with a dilemma.
This is the troupe’s second production at St. Paul’s, which had been the Mission Church of St. Martin of Tours, Jackson. With dedication from the Arts Council members, this charming country church has been transformed into a quaint theatre house complete with dramatic lighting and stage. St. Martin’s Players have been active since 2005; this marks their fifteenth production.
Come enjoy an evening of laughs and thoughts. Celebrating the Kentucky Derby, audience members may want to wear stylish hats or fancy bowties (prizes will be given). Refreshments with a Southern flare will be available. Tickets may be purchased at the door--$8.00 general admission and $5.00 seniors and students.

Harford National Day Of Prayer
Submitted by Lillie Thomas, Coordinator
A prayer service will be held at the Gazebo at The Harford Volunteer Fire Company, Thursday May 1 at Noon. All are invited. Come and greet old friends and meet new ones.
The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.
The National Day of Prayer has great signifcance for us as a nation as it enables us to recall and to teach the way in which our founding fathers sought the wisdom of God when faced with critical decisions. It stands as a call for us to humbly come before God, seeking His guidance for our leaders and His grace upon us as a people.
Please join us at the Gazebo 12:00 noon on May 1st as we join the nation in observing this special day. Please bring a chair as there is limited seating. The Harford Volunteer Fire Company is located just north of town on Fair Hall Road.
The National Day of Prayer service is a Harford Historical Society event. For more information or questions, call 570-434-2507.

SCCD To Sponsor Fish For Stocking
Submitted by Robert Fearnley
One of the great features of Susquehanna County is the ponds and lakes that dot the landscape. However, many of them need help with management of the fish populations in them. Maybe there is a need for more prey fish to bulk up the bass in the pond. Perhaps the bluegills in the pond are over-populated and stunted; a solution may be more predators like large-mouthed bass or channel catfish. Ponds with an excess of aquatic weeds may find grass carp or koi useful in weed control. New ponds can start from scratch with both predator and prey species, from disease and parasite free stock.
The Susquehanna County Conservation District is sponsoring a fish for stocking sale on May 25th with a order deadline of May 16th. The fish will be delivered to the Conservation District office at 88 Chenango Street, Montrose, PA. The fish will be in cardboard boxes with plastic liners and added oxygen to ensure a healthy and safe trip to their new home. Species available include rainbow trout, channel catfish, largemouth bass, bluegills, fathead minnows, koi and grass carp. If you are interested in these fish for stocking, you can contact the District at 570-278-4600-ext 280 for an order form or look on the District’s website at {suscondistrict.org} and download a form.

Susquehanna County Seeking A Princess
Submitted by Susquehanna County Dairy Promotion Committee
Once again Susquehanna County is seeking candidates to serve as Dairy Princess. Single young ladies between the ages of 16-24 with interest in the dairy industry may want to consider devoting time to promote the industry. A county Princess serves for one year. Not old enough to be a Princess? The Dairy Maid and Dairy Ambassador program functions within the County to assist the Dairy Princess in carrying out her duties and may do dairy promoting on her own as well.
Qualifications for Dairy Princess include at least one of the following: a daughter of a dairy farmer or daughter of an employee of a dairy farm or dairy related business, be a 4-H member and own or least one dairy animal as a 4-H project or have served at least one year as a Dairy Maid or Dairy Ambassador. A Princess candidate must be 16 years old by July 1st of the current year.
Dairy Maids and Dairy Ambassadors must have a sincere desire to promote dairy products, be a milk drinker and include other dairy products in their personal diets.
Members of the dairy court work hard getting the message to as many people as possible about the importance of having “three every day” of dairy as part of one’s diet. Susquehanna County Dairy Princess Mercedes Spickerman wants everyone to know, “Dairy products aren’t only delicious and nutritious; they are an absolute necessity in developing strong bones, muscle mass and healthy teeth. All dairy products contain 9 essential nutrients.”
Young ladies involved as Princess, Ambassador or Dairy Maid develop skills in public speaking, leadership, journalism and marketing through their promotion work. These girls make public appearances promoting the dairy industry at schools, festivals, parades, churches, restaurants, sports events, club and association meetings to name a few.
Dairy Princess Mercedes Spickerman will be handing her reign to a new Susquehanna County Princess at the 2014 Dairy Princess Pageant being held on Friday, May 23rd, 7:30 at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church Hall on Church Street in Montrose. The public is invited to attend.
Girls interest in being a Dairy Princess candidate or taking part in the program as a Dairy Ambassador or Dairy Maid may contact Evie Goff (570-278-1212) by the May 1st deadline. Other committee members you may contact include Mary Puzo, Peggy Empet, Cathy Bewley, Michelle Kowalewski, Dana Empet, Callie Curley, Abbey Puzo, Daisy Matulevich or Cindy Tompkins. Any of these committee members will be happy to answer questions about the Dairy Promotion Program in Susquehanna County. An orientation meeting will take place before the May 23rd Dairy Princess Pageant for all Princess Candidates, Dairy Ambassadors and Dairy Maids. If interested, give a committee member a call.

SCHS Juniors/Seniors Scholarships Available
Submitted by Jon Carpenter, Past President ALR Chapter 86
For nearly ten years the American Legion Riders of Chapter 86, Susquehanna, PA have been awarding an art scholarship to area Juniors and Seniors who submit art work for our annual Fallen Heroes Run. The generous $500 dollar scholarship helps these students to further their education or pursue a military career beyond high school. Additionally, it also helps the American Legion Riders of Chapter 86 to raise awareness of the dire need to honor and assist our area veterans, from WWII through the more recent conflicts in the Middle East.
Annually the Riders assist and honor area veterans in many ways. Visibly we participate in many parades, ceremonies, funerals and most importantly through our annual Fallen Heroes Run, which is our largest annual event to raise funds to help area vets. This year our run will take place on August 9, 2014. Furthermore, behind the scenes we also offer assistance in many other ways. One example is our endeavor to foster a connection between our areas, respected veterans and our future leaders through programs like this art scholarship.
Only one submission will be selected each year and specific requirements can be found on the American Legion Riders Chapter 86 Facebook page. The deadline to submit art work is quickly approaching. All work must be submitted to the American Legion Post 86 located at 1234 Main Street, Susquehanna, PA by May 12, 2014. For more information please call 570-853-3542.
