We’re Not Done Yet

Katelyn Sherwood is a second grader in Mr. Woodruff’s class at Blue Ridge Elementary School. When Katelyn was 5 years-old she heard about an 8 year-old girl named Rachel Beckwith who asked for $300 toward a water well in Africa for her 9th birthday. Rachel drew national attention when she died in a car accident a week before her 9th birthday. Katelyn was inspired and for her 6th birthday she asked for a well in Africa and a sparkly blue purse. Her friends and family were generous and she, coincidentally received $300 for her birthday.

However, Katelyn wanted to help an entire community, 20 families, get clean, safe water. In order to raise more money she opened her own savings account and called it her "well fund." She and her sister, Payten set up a lemonade stand at the bottom of their driveway, she colored pictures and sold them for donations at her dad, Ron’s, store, she put all of her tooth fairy money into her fund and asked Santa for money for it last Christmas, and with Payten’s help she raised $300 by holding a yard sale and taking donations.

Katelyn’s final effort before this Christmas was an art auction. She asked her mom to wake her up early each day for five weeks so that she could paint. The family held an art auction of Katelyn’s work at their home on December 8th and it was a huge success.

Over a year and a half Katelyn raised $1,580. She donated all of the money to Compassion International who delivered safe water systems to 20 families by Christmas. After the money transaction was complete her mom, Charlotte, asked her if she was happy. She sat quiet for a moment and asked if there were more families who needed water to live. After Charlotte told her there were, Katelyn replied, "Then we're not done yet".
