Denise Dennis To Speak In Brooklyn

This year marks the 26th Annual Meeting of the Brooklyn Historical Society, scheduled for July 27 at 2:00 p.m. in the Brooklyn Township Building.

The featured speaker will be Denise Dennis, of the Dennis Farm Charitable Trust, located in Brooklyn Township. This year marks the 220th anniversary of Prince Perkins and family settling in Brooklyn, in 1793 as free black people working and owning their own farm. The people of Brooklyn and Susquehanna County were thus the first to recognize that the Constitution of the United States was and is “color blind.”

This past February, Brooklyn Historical Society President Ralph Christianson attended a special event in Philadelphia, at the African-American Museum where Denise spoke to a crowd of 200 about “The Dennis Farm: Past, Present and Future,” and what the Trust means to the preserving of its heritage.

In her remarks about the Perkins-Dennis family in Pennsylvania, she stated: “While slaves were helping to build the White House and Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., this rare story of free black people was unfolding in Brooklyn Township.”

President Christianson has announced that, following the program, many historical publications will be displayed for purchases. Refreshments will be available. The public is invited. For further information call Curtis Stone, (570) 289-4610.
