Dimock Camp Meeting Hosts Open House
Submitted by Shelley McAndrew
July 27 will be a day of celebration, as Dimock Camp Meeting hosts “Celebrate Dimock” – an open house event that everyone is invited to.
The open house festivities run from 11am to 3pm at the camp meeting grounds on Campground Road, just off Route 29 in Dimock. The whole family will enjoy themselves, regardless of age, with a variety of activities including face painting/balloons by Cosmo and Connie; strolling Damian the Magician with live show; bingo; children’s games; and a gardening display/demonstration brought to you by Penn State Cooperative Extension.
True Friends Animal Welfare Center of Montrose will be on hand to show off some adorable animal friends available for adoption. Kids will have a chance to check out some fire trucks up close, and the Christian Motorcycle Association will be showing off their wheels and talk about what they’re all about.
“Just Down the Road” gospel band, led by Steve Hulslander - immediate past president of the Dimock Camp Meeting Association, will bring sweet music to your ears to help set the mood of this festive day.
No party would be complete without food, which will be free for all to enjoy.
There is no admission fee, but non-perishable food donations are being accepted and will benefit the local food pantry.
The Dimock Camp Meeting traces its roots back to 1875 when a decision was made by several Methodist Episcopal congregations in the region to create “a permanent camp meeting ground” in the then Wyalusing District of the Methodist Church. Its purposes were spiritual revival and evangelization as the “plain gospel” was proclaimed and taught. It was reported that 7,000 persons were present the first night of the camp meeting-style preaching gathering. The camp meeting was chartered on August 15, 1877.
Today, Dimock Camp Meeting hosts seasonal Sunday evening services. Sunday evening services begin on the first Sunday of July and the season ends on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. All services begin at 7pm and are followed by refreshments in the dining hall.
Services are non-denominational and each program is different. There are many popular singing groups from the area, favorite “return” preachers, other speakers sharing the many types of ministry they are involved with in their communities and churches.
Read The County Transcript for announcements and check out www.DimockCampMeeting.org for updated information.
The Association also has a cottage available for use by pastors, lay leaders and other families for a donation.
If you always wondered what Dimock Camp Meeting was all about for these past 135 years plus, bring the family and visit “Celebrate Dimock Camp Meeting”.

Harford Fair Entry Deadline
Submitted by Cindy Reynolds
The Harford Fair is the largest community event in the county and depends on the community for the wonderful displays and prize-winning animals. There are 23 different departments in which to display items for judging. Perhaps you spent the winter knitting, making a special quilt, sewing a special outfit, working on some needlework, or attending a painting class or working with glass. The result is a specially handcrafted item, which would make a wonderful entry for the Harford Fair.

The 2013 Harford Fair Premium Books as well as brochures are available at many area businesses. Specific locations are listed on the Harford Fair website at www.harfordfair.com.
August 1 is the deadline for sending entry blanks or submitting them on-line. Use only the 2013 up-to-date class listings in each department since there are many changes from last year’s fair. The categories, the rules, and the entry blanks can be found on the fair website or in the fair book available at the secretary’s office on the fair grounds and many other locations throughout the area.
In addition to the department entries, there are many contests to enter some of which include the Harford Fair Queen Contest, a Fun and Safety Poster Contest, the Woodsman’s Contest, the Animal Costume Dressing Contest, and the Turkey Calling Contest. Harford Fair is proud to announce the sponsorship of “PA Preferred” Products for the Chocolate Baking Contest, the Angel Food Cake Contest, and the Apple Pie Contest. The first place winner of each of these contests is eligible to enter the 2014 PA Farm Show competition.
Other contests and rules which are traditional events at the Harford Fair can be found on the fair website at. Do not use any listings of rules and classes from the past. If you have questions, please call the Secretary’s Office at 434-4300, Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
So don’t miss out on anything offered at the 156th Harford Fair this year. Submit your entry forms no later than August 1. Plan your entries and hope to see you at the fair, August 19-24, 2013.
