Austin Cohen Is Perfect In Pittsburgh
In the last regular season tournament, the Elk Lake Forensics team headed west, to Pittsburgh to compete against the top debaters from Pittsburgh, Erie, eastern Ohio, and West Virginia at the Bethel Park Blackhawk Invitational Tournament.
For senior Lincoln-Douglas Debater Austin Cohen, the results this weekend were the same as they had been for the entire season, complete dominance.

Bethel Park Blackhawk Invitational Lincoln-Douglas Debate Champion Austin Cohen
Cohen breezed through the 5 preliminary rounds with an undefeated record by picking up wins over debaters from Erie McDowell, Upper Saint Clair, and North Allegheny HS.
Cohen, the only undefeated debater, was top seeded in Quarter Finals. He won a unanimous decision in Quarter-Finals over a debater from North Allegheny HS and advanced to Semi-Finals.
There he met another debater from North Allegheny, Drew Bjorklund, whom he had defeated during the preliminary rounds. Cohen won a split decision and advanced to Finals.
In Finals, he met another North Allegheny HS debater Terek Maalouf. Cohen won a decisive 5-0 victory in the round and, for the second consecutive year, won LD Debate at the Blackhawk Invitational.
Matthew Horvath put in a solid performance by placing 13th with a 3 win 2 loss record.
Cohen’s wins now push his season record to 58 wins and only 3 losses. He has now won every tournament that he has competed in during the season.
“Austin’s performance is simply amazing. I have never seen another debater dominate the competition in every tournament that he competed in,” commented EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious.
The EL Forensics Team will take a week off. Then, they will compete at the Pa. High School Speech League District 8 Championship at Abington Heights HS on February 23.

Elk Lake Forensics Perfect At Pennsbury
Submitted by Keith Brosius

Pictured are Elk Lake Place-Winners at 10th Annual PFI Tournament: Matthew Horvath – 10th Place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate; Austin Cohen – 1st Place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.
Lincoln-Douglas Debate looked like this at the 10th Annual Pennsbury Falcon Invitational at Pennsbury HS on February 1-2: 69 debaters. 11 rounds; 0 losses; 1 champion - Austin Cohen.
For the second time in his career, Elk Lake senior Austin Cohen won the PFI Tournament, which brings in the top debaters from 6 states, while teammate Matthew Horvath finish 10th.
Cohen cruised his way, undefeated, through the 6 preliminary rounds in LD Debate by defeating debaters from Council Rock North, Loyola-Blakefield, Pittsburgh Central Catholic and LaSalle College HS. This made him the top seeded debater going into the round of 32.
As a result of this seeding, Cohen did not have to debate in the round of 32 and advanced automatically to the Octo-Final Round. There, he defeated Jay Maier from Pittsburgh Central Catholic HS.
In Quarter-Finals, Cohen handled Michael Pronin from William Tennet HS and advanced on to Semi-Finals where he defeated Edward Jing from Unionville HS and headed on to Finals.
Cohen would face Robert Gormisky from LaSalle College HS, whom he defeated in Finals at the LaSalle Forum Tournament in December. In a repeat of the December Final, Cohen defeated Gormisky and captured the championship in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.
Senior Matthew Horvath also had a solid performance at the tournament. He compiled a 5 win and 1 loss record during the preliminary rounds by defeating debaters from LaSalle College, Perkiomen Valley, Lexington, and Broad Run HS.
As a result of his record he advanced to the round of 32 as the 8th seeded debater. Just like Cohen, he did not have to debate that round. In the Octo-Final round, Horvath lost a split decision to Michael Pronin from William Tennet HS and placed 10th overall in the tournament.
Cohen broke two team records, which he had set two years ago at this tournament. Those records were the most wins at a single tournament, 11 wins, and the most National Forensics League Points at a single tournament, 66 points.
Cohen now has a season record of 50 wins and 3 losses. He has also won every tournament that he has competed in this season.
“This was another solid performance by two solid senior debaters. To place two in the top 10 at this tournament is really impressive. Austin (Cohen) is simply having an incredible season,” commented EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious.
The team was to wrap up its regular season on February 8-9, Pittsburgh for the Bethel Park HS Wildcat Invitational.
