Forest Landowners Spring Woods Walk
Submitted by Robert Wagner
The Susquehanna County Forest Land Owners Association (SCFLOA) in cooperation with the Wayne/Lackawanna Forest landowners Association (WLFLA) and Doug and Margaret Sheldon will host a 2013 Spring Woods Walk. The woods walk will be held on March 9, 2013 on an actively managed section of woods in Jackson Twp., in Susquehanna County that has new gas pipeline construction taking place.
SCFLOA President Jim James asks you to “Join us for this timely walk that will bring about discussions of best management practices for restoration of pipeline right-of-ways, which includes integration with forestry management goals. Specific seeding and planting options will be presented.” Mr. James further explained that, “... you do not need to be members of either forest landowners group to take part in the walk and talk.” Hear presentations from Ryan Brown PA Bureau of Forestry Service Forester serving Susquehanna County, Doug Sheldon will talk about his woodland management work and his new gas pipeline right of way experiences on the property. The PA Game Commission Wildlife Diversity Biologist Rich Fritsky will talk about the different types of habitat/cover and what that means to wildlife and a pipeline company environmental compliance consultant will be answering questions during the walk.
This event will start to gather at 9:00 am at SWN well pad #49, just off Rt. 92 with its intersection of Haydens Road (Twp. Road 649), 2.6 mi. south of Susquehanna. Woods walk signs will indicate the road turnoff area. Members of the SCFLOA Board of Directors will be guiding cars to the parking and meeting area and then offering up coffee, hot chocolate and donuts.
At 9:30 am some brief introductory comments from Doug Sheldon and members of SCFLOA will precede our walking though an actively cut forest area where over 400 loads of culled firewood were taken. "The degree of difficulty is moderate and includes walking on some uneven or steep terrain so please plan accordingly."
At 10:00 am the walk progresses to and through the actively cut forest area of 180 acres of timber stand improvement work. There will be several stops with talks in this area.
At 11:00 am we will emerge from the timber stand improvement (TSI) work area onto the pipeline that is awaiting spring planting and adjacent past forest improvement practices. Talks about the pipeline, the seeding and the forest on both sides of the pipeline that show different management practices will take place during the next hour. We will walk up the pipeline and return to the gas well pad and our cars.
At 12:00 pm Depart for Lunch – 12:15 arrive for lunch. Lunch is being served by the UMW at the nearby North Jackson Methodist Church. Lunch reservations should be made by March 2.
The hot soup and home-made sandwich lunch with dessert is being sponsored compliments of the Susquehanna Gathering Pipeline Company.(Reservations for lunch are required.) Lunch will be followed by sspecial information session from pipeline consultant Sandy Long of J. F. Kiely with a question and answer session. Join us to explore forest conservation and reclamation opportunities related to gas pipelines. (If you are lucky you may get a ride in Dr. Sheldons’ restored WWII vintage army vehicle called a M-37.)
