Forestry Conservation Funding Sign-Up
Submitted By Bob Wagner NRCS Soil Conservation Technician, Susq. Co.
The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has recognized the importance of forestry management in conserving natural resources. NRCS offers both technical and financial assistance to implement best management practices for forestry management through its Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) such as forest stand improvement, mast tree release, herbaceous weed control, hay scented fern control, early successional habitat management, forestry management plans, tree and shrub plantings, brush management, conservation cover plantings of native warm season grasses, cool season grasses or pollinator habitat and stream habitat management.
Funding is awarded annually through a competitive process. Each EQIP application is ranked based on the environmental benefit as well as the overall cost benefit of the proposed BMPs. You must have a current forestry management plan that address soil erosion and water quality resource concerns to receive funding for conservation practices. The funding for the development of forestry management plans has a different ranking process. District Conservationist Ain Welmon explained “… the funding that was allocated to farmers & other landowners in Susquehanna County for all EQIP contracts in fiscal year 2012 was over $350,000. Our local office, here in Montrose, has assisted landowners by developing farm conservation plans, wildlife habitat plans, conservation security program plans, Agricultural Farmland preservation plans to insure that they were in a good position to have their Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) and other applications funded.”
To have your project considered for the first round of fiscal year 2013 funding, applications available at all USDA NRCS offices must be submitted to your local NRCS office no later than 9/15/2012. Applications received after that time will be evaluated in consecutive rounds if funds remain. The office can be reached by calling 278-1011, extension 2, 103 or 108.
