Center Celebrates National Nursing Assistants Week

The week of June 14-21st is a special week for the nursing assistants at Forest City Nursing & Rehab Center. It’s the 35th annual National Nursing Assistants Week. In appreciation for the care given by the many nursing assistants at Forest City Nursing & Rehab, the residents made treasure boxes filled with goodies and presented them to the CNAs (certified nursing assistant).

Pictured (l-r) are Erin Jubinsky, CNA and Mrs. Mary Risboskin, a resident of Forest City Nursing & Rehab for nearly seven years, and life-long resident of Forest City.

National Nursing Assistants Week is sponsored by the National Network of Career Nursing Assistants to promote nursing assistants as caregivers. This year’s theme is “Nursing Assistants @ the Heart of Caring.” For information on becoming a nursing assistant check out www cna-network.org.

Resident Of The Month

Each month The Forest City Nursing & Rehab Center recognizes the remarkable lives of its residents by honoring one of them each month. The Resident of the Month for the month of June is Mrs. Wilma Scarpelli. Wilma was born on June 26, 1926, to Anna Mae and Loren Blackwell, from whom Wilma inherited her strong work ethic. Her father earned a living as a farmer, lumberjack, and landscaper. Her mother worked the fields on their farm in Saucier, Mississippi, while raising seven children. Upon high school graduation, Wilma attended nursing school in New Orleans during World War II as a Cadet Nurse.

Mrs. Wilma Scarpelli

Soon after, she met her future husband, Rosario Scarpelli at a USO dance. The two were married on October 7, 1951. Rosario continued his career in the Air Force, while Wilma worked as an RN and raised their four children. Through the years, she continued to advance her nursing career by supervising midwives and working with Public Health. Today, Wilma is the proud grandmother of nine and great grandmother of eight.

As a member of the Methodist Church, Wilma enjoyed singing in the choir. She loves music and knows the lyrics to countless songs. She enjoys watching football and tennis, and has a great many friends at the Nursing Center. Congratulations to Wilma on being Resident of the Month!

Sizzlin’ Steaks 4-H Club News

We had our first official 4-H meeting at the home of the Borove/Kasa family. After calling the meeting to order, saying the pledges and roll call. One of our leaders, Julie Harvatine, told us about our club treasury.

Our 4-H books and the project requirements were handed out to each of us. Then we elected our club officers. President is Alyssa Clarkson, Vice President is Corey Kasa, Secretary is Autumn Whitehead, Treasurer is Evan Clarkson, News reporter is Holly Harvatine and our club photographer is Kayla Kasa.

Alyssa took over the meeting. We talked about our club picnic and somehow doing it with an outing to Valhalla Castle in New Milford, PA. We are going to ask Mrs. Whitehead a few questions about the castle to better plan our outing.

Our community service project will be planting flowers on veteran’s graves at Maplewood Cemetery again this year. Julie Harvatine will ask for permission and get the flowers. We decided to plant them on 5-26-2012 at 6:30 p.m. followed by a trip to the Lenox Dairy Bar for ice cream as a club. If it rains we’ll figure out another date to do it.

We went over the importance of reading the Newsline each and every month. It comes from the county extension office and has lots of information and events in it.

Corey Kasa did his demonstration on how to plant flowers. He planted them as a gift for him Mom for Mother’s Day! Good thing she was at work not at the meeting. Kayla Kasa made muddy buddies for her demonstration. They tasted good!

Our next meeting will be at the Clarkson /Titus home on 6-15-2012 at 6:30 p.m.

We had snacks, cookies and fruit after the meeting was adjourned.
