Families walking together, participating in jumping rope and hula hoops, and learning about some healthy snacking were opportunities provided at the Health and Wellness Event held at the Mountain View Elementary School. This annual event was planned and organized by Karen Voigt, District Director of Curriculum and Instruction. The evening began with registration in the lobby by Mrs. Tranovich after which families walked laps to equal a mile. Those who completed the walk displayed their names on sneakers posted on the wall. From there the families perused displays in the lobby. Susquehanna County Dairy Maid Emory Bewley and Dairy Ambassador Mercedes Spickerman conducted a jump rope and hula hoop contest. Arrangements for them to participate were made of Penn State Extension Office Manager Evelyn Goff. Wilma Wellness aka retired teacher Cindy Reynolds read stories and provided activities about amounts of sugar in foods and walking off calories.

Karen Voigt organized the educational event which provided information, activities, and snacks in a fun, interactive format.
The families were then moved to the gym to watch and even try out some zumba moves. Cathy Marvin, zumba instructor at the Windwood Hill Dance Academy in New Milford, brought her class to the event. During the workout, she demonstrated and encouraged families to try some of the moves with the music. Many children and their parents joined in but most found the hour long workout a bit much for their endurance. Cathy said that her class meets three times a week for an hour workout.
The wrap-up activity included snacks and more time to enjoy the vendor displays. Dr. Elaine Chichura provided a display table with snacks and recipes. Yogurt granola treats were served as well as the 4H Trail Mix. Heather Fedoryk manager of the Nutrition Group which is the food service for the school cafeteria provided a variety of snacks encouraging portion control. Information on the service was provided for parents. They also had some give aways for those in attendance. All who attended enjoyed the evening in a fun way to learn about health and wellness ideas.
